Picked it up for $5 at a garage sale, looks new, but am concerned something around the handle is missing? Is the handle just painted a pebbly black like you see here? Or is there a rubber cover or something that goes over?

What a great deal, hopefully it has not been torqued beyond it's range. It looks like you have everything, the handle on the one I have looks the same.

you can try to use it, see if it goes back to zero or wherever you started, going both forward and reverse. Second option, take off the four screws and see if the beam has been twisted. The design is pretty neat, it is basically a beam wrench with a dial instead of a pointer.

The proto looks nice, and it sounds like it was a great deal. Notice it goes to 100 inch pounds as opposed to the 30lb limit of the one yer pop had that you showed me. That is reason enough to keep both, just cause yer pop's is too cool fer school!

As for the Proto, it looks like it has the adjusting dial face to me.

Thanks for the info and advice, guys.

As Uncle B indicated, I have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to inch-lb torque wrenches. This is the wrench UB is referring to:

Cool wrenches Bolster, but $5 bets you never use them. I've got two inch-pound beam wrenches and they never had a socket on them.
