This Vise Anything Special?

A Polish mfg'd vise IIRC that works backasswards - the static and dynamic jaws are reversed compared to a standard US vise (Reed, Columbian et al)....

I have one like that. I paid $50 for it a year ago. I believe it is made by a Polish company called Bison. It is pretty tough.

Its like the Lazy Boy of vises. The vise can be mounted with a wall 1" from the handle and work for you. Its the body that travels, not the front part. Those gib screws on the sides can adjust the tightness of the travel. Its a well made import, that's for sure.

That's cool, but I still can't see the seam between the body and the base that let's the body slide.

That's because the photo is looking downwards. The seam is under the protruding lip just below the row of bolts.

Here is a photo of mine. They were made by FPU in Poland. That company is now called Bison and their products are very nice.

Same here ...and I think its a extremely strong vise and tight tolerances to boot !

Unusual vise but not sure how useful it would be for cutting, drilling etc as the job would be held over the workbench instead of in front of it - nowhere for lengthy protusions to hang down.
Also looks like a piece is broken out of the sliding jaw - bottom right corner of pic.
This could happen when applying force with the jaw open to a wide setting.

I'd definitely buy that for $25, since I got mine for $75 eight years ago. Pretty stout vise and nice tight tolerance. Only wish it was made in USA.

Funny thing with the one I got, the guy selling it on the Sacramento CL listed it as a Fowler Vise. I looked up Fowler on the interweb and found that they made high quality stuff and was USA made, but I could not find anything about their Vises. Got it home and was inspecting it a little closer and BAM. MADE IN POLAND! I was bummed at the time, but now love the thing. It's a tank. Somebody years ago must have pealed a Fowler sticker off of one of their instrument containers and stuck it on the Vise. He sold it because it was too big. I bought it because it was really big.

I have one of those. It is very well made. Mine had a Hy-Test decal on the static jaw. 58lbs of Polish steel!

Hi, I'm a retired Tooling Engineer and I used to buy tooling for GM. This is a high quality vise. Note the slide has gib adjustment screws. This vise has many machined parts. I have this ones big brother as well as three other of different brands. I would say this is one of the best I've ever seen. At that price it's dirt cheap. I don't really know what it cost to ring mine out of my hands.

my friend has a vise identical to it his has 6in wide jaws and weighs a little over #100 he paid $25 for his and said its a great vise.
it does work backwards from most but his is smooth as heck, i would by it anytime for that price
