This weeks haul at the transfer station

Sometimes I come home from the transfer station with more than I dropped off. Chop saw, circular saw, air compressor Husky homeowner type, Decent quick grip clamp, post hole digger. Already have two but hey why not, airless paint sprayer they left paint in it, took the gun off hooked it to a bucket of water turned it on to blow out the hose cleaned the gun it works fine.

Amazing what gets tossed, we have never bought a new bbq, people throw them away instead of replacing the burner. We have a nice side burner for the last 8 years, Self driving mower broken safety cable, one dollar repair been using it for 3 years. I could go on, so much gets thrown away that is still useful with a slight repair or giving it away to someone that will use it instead of throwing it in the junk pile.Our society wastes too much.

A lot of the stuff I end up giving away to friends and family that can use some tools.

The paint sprayer will come in handy spaying preservative on our wood siding.

Nice!! Most stations here don’t allow picking which is absurd, but there is still one not too far off I go to regularly. Recently came home with a Craftsman tablesaw, two 2HP electric motors from water pumps, an ice maker machine, some windows I used in my workshop, the list goes on. Love it!

My buddy who paints as a side business has that same sprayer, I think it's like $600 new at least.

That looks like trash day in our neighborhood. No one knows how to fix stuff and they don't want to bother selling it. I passed on a Toro 521 snowblower at the curb a few weeks ago since I don't need two. It was gone in an hour. Also missed out on a free Gold's Platinum Home Gym. If I picked all the grills and lawnmowers sitting out, I'd need a warehouse.

We have an unofficial custom here that if you think someone else can use it, you leave it outside the dumpster.

We had a guy die a few years ago--he saw something in the dumpster, stepped inside to grab it, slipped, hit is head and died. His wife sued. They cracked down after that.

We have found several rifles, a pressure washer, many bikes, etc in the dumpster but have to limit our adventures to what is immediately accessible or left on the ground.

If you kill yourself in a dumpster nobody should be able to be held liable. I posted a quote on FB the other day:

Best thing I ever found on the side of the road free was a Honda track snowblower. Started right up like a Honda, needed a drive belt (which was a PIA job, but then again, they all are now!) No more dumps around here but I used to pick a lot when I was a kid

No this time all were good there was other ryobi stuff there, I have a feeling someone was cleaning out a garage and just tossed everything. Ryobi 10 or twelve inch bandsaw I was going to grab for someone I know but another guy had his eye on it so I let it go. I already have 3 bandsaws in the shop, and a Ryobi table saw another thing I did not need.

I had a hard time giving away my last tablesaw when I bought a delta unisaw at auction.

The only thing that needed work was cleaning out the paint sprayer.

Trash picking, being at the curb or landfill is pathetic in NYC...how pathetic? According to my scrap pickup guy about a $2000 fine for removing anything from the curb. Forget about landfill picking.

With Sandy it was amazing what was thrown out. My neighbor dumped a brand new stainless BBQ, must have cost $1500. Half the stuff at the curb was water proof.

Forgot, one of my neighbors throw out 2 working submersible sump pumps...presently they are down in my basement. Same guy threw out about 6 bowling balls, I guess because they were contaminated by Sandy flood water.

We hardly have a dump here so most things are at the end of the driveway. In the last 2 months we got a decent gas grill with side burner, tow behind trailer for a tractor (the tires actually hold air) and a plastic sand box with lid. All stuff I actually needed and will use.

Never found any rifles on trash day in Los Angeles, that's for sure. I think the 'scrappers' looking through recycling bins he night before pickup day must get them.

I have got some good stuff out of the trash. A leather chair from a doctor. Chicago pneumatic drill, hf jack that had some surface rust, a door for my garage.

At our transfer station, "nice" things are set off to the side for the taking. Below are some recent hauls post cleanup/refurbishing. Yes, it is amazing what some people throw out. If they didn't, we couldn't do what we do!
