I finally bought one when they went on sale for $339 over Thanksgiving.

I had to shim one caster, no biggie. I did notice in the drawer that has the handle were a bag of black clips. Maybe 10-20 in there. I have no idea what they are use for.

Does anyone know what these clips are used for?

I'll get a picture when I get to shop tomorrow.

If you plan to use the supplied drawer labels, the black clips attach to each end of the drawer handle trim to prevent the labels from sliding out constantly.

Ohh, so that's what they are used for. Thanks! The manual didn't say anything about it that I found.

the black clips are for the drawer handles, one on each side. my 44" did not come with any, but the side box had them already installed on some and. the top box had them on some drawers as well...without them as you can see, the stupid drawer strips are constantly slipping out...all 3 pieces, though purchased separately mohths apart, were packaged intact so I don't think someone took them, they came that way...the only minor inconvenience of an otherwise great box.

Well shoot, sure would have been nice if mine had come with these! I thought it was a strange design that the supplied labels kept slipping out the ends. Eventually I just removed the labels in favor of bare aluminum - which I'll apply my own printed label stickers to later if I ever get organized.

Ah, mystery solved. My 44" did not come with the clips. Each night when i close the chest the strips are in place and then the next night when I go in the garage they have slipped out. So what is making the plastic and the strip slip out if no one has touched the chest?

A couple of tips. If your box didn't come with enough clips to do both ends of each drawer, a clip on the outer end of each drawer is enough to hold the label and protector in place.

The clips on mine were too tight to fit correctly. Trimming them down just a little with a utility knife makes them easier to put in place, but still not fall out.

mine do as well. I assume static or temp changes...wonder if you can get the clips separately. I'm going to check...

nope. none of the user manuals show them or list in the parts diagrams. I emailed their customer support asking if they are available citing this forum as evidence many want them.

will post back if I get a response.

Thank-you for that. I had absolutely no idea what those things were supposed to do. Thank goodness I just threw them in the back of one of the drawers.

I haven't tried it because I don't care to have my drawer's labelled, but it would seem like trimming the labels a little short at each end, leaving enough room to apply a little clear scotch tape to hold down the ends would do the trick? Just a suggestion!

Mine came with them in a bag with the hardware for the handle. I put them in the ends of drawers so I wouldn't lose them in case I wanted to do the labels later...

Great box whether you got them or not

Well damn! I never got them with mine either. Of course I think I still have a handle I never opened up since I installed side boxes. I've been using scotch tape.
Be nice to get a pleasant surprise when I get home.

I got all 4 pieces as a Father's Day gift from my wife in 2004. Mine is the flat red powder coated version. You guys are showing a newer gloss red version. In a home shop setting I have had no major issues.

I folded part of a recipe card to size and wedged it behind the labels at either end - gives it just enough pressure so the labels don't wander. Easily removed if you need to change labels, too. Any sort of thin cardboard, heavy paper or thin plastic stock cut to fit works too.

Do you guys find the drawers are deep enough on this box? I'm probably going to purchase one in the next few days to replace my mid 90's craftsman ball bearing box.

Those things would have been nice to have. I got tired of the plastic sliding out sideways and the rough edges of the aluminum so I just removed it all.

I do like the look of it like this, but I may not have tried it if mine had just come with the little plastic end caps.

If you mean deep as in front to back they should be the same to maybe an inch deeper than your craftsman. When I got my last box I ended up getting a similar husky over this one. Bad decision btw. I spent a lot of time looking at deeper boxes but the only 40" ish boxes that are deeper are high line models. It's actually cheaper to get a box in the 56" range if you want deeper drawers.

The drawers are tall enough but they are definitely not deep front to back. That's my biggest gripe about the box. There's not enough floor space inside. My wrench sets are stacked on top of each other rather than laid out.

I've had no issues with depth. It does cut down on storage space over all, but my wrench sets fit fine. Comparable quality with deeper drawers would probably be a step up with truck brands. Not an option on my budget and use.

Since you've removed the drawer trim, it may look even cleaner yet if you de-badge it and peel that US General nameplate off also? I removed it when I first got my box, but then decided I preferred it and stuck it back on. It's only double sided tape holding it on, with no drilled holes behind it. Since it's made of soft aluminum, the trick is trying not to bend it all up when removing so that you can re-apply it if you don't like the look without it.

I like the looks of that. How easy did the aluminum come off? How are they held on?

Re: Those with the HF 44" boxes

Mine is as deep or deeper than my old gray craftsman box. I was able to fit my wrench sets in fine. I use a seperate drawer for metric and standard.

They just snap off if you pull kinda... down and backwards.. I actually made a video about it:

I use the label system. I have my grown kids working on their cars out of it too, and when I ask them to fetch me something it really helps.

I just wish someone made a really nice metal Binford label I could buy. :D

Thanks. The link didn't work, but I found the video searching YouTube.

That's easy enough. I'm going to take mine off tonight when I get home. Especially since I can put them back on if I change my mind.

compare it to the typical setup--not as deep as a snap-on maybe, but way deeper and taller than the craftsman setup I was using before. since I have the top box as well, I have plenty of floor space.

I dedicate a separate drawer for std and metric wrenches and you can get a full set of combo's on one side laid out, and a full set of gearwrenches on the other, with space for other wrenches as well.

check out the black plastic drawer organizer that HF sells for $10. you have to trim about 1/8" off it to fit the drawer perfectly, but it's got spots for the 2 sets of wrenches, spot for allen wrenches, and 3 more spots for stubbies, ignition wrenches, and DBE's. I love mine, but I dremeled out one of the allen wrench spots for more space in each one.(std, metric). you could dremel them both of you don't keep allens in the wrench drawer.

they only ever have one or two in stock at a time so you may have trouble finding it. not a typical china import they buy by the pallet, they may get them locally...which is why they are in-store only.

added pics of how I cut mine.

regarding the end clips, I got a response from HF if anyone wants to order them. they are expensive so I came up with a much cheaper solution.

The part you are requesting requires special ordering and can take a minimum of 10 weeks for us to receive. If you would like to place this order, you may call 1-888-866-5797, Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 4:00 pm (PST).

LN# Part# Description Price (plus tax & shipping)

22 NONE DRAWER PLASTIC TAB $1.50 Each

my solution: I used black plastic door edge trim you can get at parts stores or box stores for a couple bucks.

remove the aluminum edge; the sides are too thick to accept the trim piece.

snip a small section off the back clip edge and re-install.

cut a piece of the black plastic trim to length and install.

from a few feet away, you can't tell the difference! best of all, for about $3 you can do the whole job.
