thoughts about something different HF 44"

I had an idea for my HF box and thought I might run it by you guys first and get your thoughts and opinions.

I have one 44" roller but it's full and I need more storage. I've been thinking of getting the top chest however I'd really like a second full length drawer. I can't really run them side by side or back to back because of floor space issues.

So here is what I was thinking. Buy another 44" roller taking out the drawers flipping them upside down taking off the casters and sitting the second. 44" on top of the first one. I know I'll have to build a small frame in-between them which will leave a little gap which I was thinking of filling with a small pull out counter and the smaller drawers would be cross crossed.

Well let me hear your thoughts?

Scrap it and buy something made in the USA to put food on your fellow Americans' plates.

Is commentary like this really necessary in every damn thread that deals with HF?

And to the OP, how tall are you? What you propose seems like it'd be a pretty tall set-up.

I think I'm lost.

Why would you take the drawers out and flip them over ?

For the record, i'm a HUGE fan of the HF 44".

There's some back story to my comment that deals with a fairly ridiculous instance of hypocrisy in light of another recent thread that blew up in which i was branded guilty of treason because i bought imported tools. I'm sure the OP can figure out where the comment came from. (Considering he is who declared my "crime.")

And with that, i'll simply say that one can never have too many HF 44s. :rocker:

Right on bro, I'd have called me out on it too. However the box I have was given to me as a gift and don't know of any true USA built boxes.

Actually all said and done the box itself would be upside down so that the two full length drawers would be together one ontop of the other.

I drank a six of Miller Light and got over it. My suggestion to you is go get yourself a bottle of sokki and get over it.

Sorry....

Anyways back to the original issue at hand...

I agree with you on the first comment. The setup will be around 75" tall, as each unit is 40" tall including the casters. If OP is say... 7 feet tall, then it makes sense. OP would also have to cut/grind off the "lip" around the top of the unit as well.

Otherwise, i'd just end up grabbing the actual topper that goes with the 44" chest. Seems it would be both cheaper and more useful in most cases.

Actually I am 6'4" and if I built the small frame for the pull out counter I think the lip would be OK.
Just took some quick measurements and came up with 6'1" total highth of the box.

Since I know the story behind this, that is freakin hilarious... Made my day.

On a serious note that does sound like an interesting idea yet it would be tall. Maybe take the casters off both boxes?

True... if it were a permanent-style install, he could probably knock the whole setup down to 70-72", and i know there's Craftsman stacks that tall already, so i guess that's a bit more "reasonable." (Though it doesn't mean that someone my height would be able to use the top drawers, but i doubt everyone is as short as i am.)

Re: thoughts about somethong different HF 44"

Have you verified that when turned upside-down, the drawer slides will still position the drawers correctly in the center of the spaces?

If so, it sounds like a cool idea. I like the slide-out tray in the gap, too, except that I'd end up fighting **** that I set there when I wanted to open the drawer above it.
The lips stick up about 5/8", so you'd probably need a frame made of 1-1/4" square tubing to fill the gap(s) and support the top box.

My only other concern would be whether the structural design distributes the weight well when the box is inverted. I don't recall what the inside framework looks like at the top of the box. Then again, since it was meant to hold a fairly heavy top box, I guess it is probably sturdy on top.

Didn't think of that, but also might want to consider if it could handle the weight of another bottom chest loaded up on top of it. Its weight capacity is calculated with the normal top chest factored in if i remember correctly.

No worries Bro, I'll build a stool in case you need to barrow a tool out of my box but just because the box says. US. General on it don't expect to find HF tools in it.

NA just kidding ya now. No hard feelings on my end in a debate like that it is expected tempers to run hot sometimes.:D

The capacity of the lower is 2900lbs, the upper is 838lbs.

I'd say that the lower isn't able to be anymore than 1450lbs all by itself (that's nearly double the size of the upper) so it should be OK

Yeah I have thought about the drawer slides but haven't checked. I know there are guys on here that have had these boxes apart and was hoping one of them might chime in concerning the drawer slides and the locking mechanism.

Also, the top box has a full length shelf on the top of it that can hold the same as a full length drawer.

You could also weld up a little ladder on the side to access the top drawers. then maybe a bench at the top. Oh and an awning........

I got it - you're building one of these......

For God sakes man I don't need to put my air compresser, welding machine, and generator in my tool box.

WAIT THAT MIGHT BE COOL.

many of the lock mechanisms on boxes are also gravity operated in a way. With the box upside down, things may not work properly and you may need to rig them up so they dont function at all.

Its really hard to say without having a box in front of me to inspect

Yeah I have thought about the drawer slides but haven't checked. I know there are guys on here that have had these boxes apart and was hoping one of them might chime in concerning the drawer slides and the locking mechanism.

I know they just hang in square holes in the vertical supports, but because the slides hang in these holes, that would mean that when you take a left slide and put in a right location, when it "hooks" into the square support holes, it will be nearly an inch different in height, making the drawers offset toward the "bottom" (top) of the chest.

Here is my only pic of this box with the drawers out. You can see the slides, and the bottom one on the far side is "unhooked" from it's mount hole.

Another idea might be to buy a second chest, cut it off just below the long drawer (under the horizontal support), and make it into an "intermediate" chest to go between your roll cab and a top box.

Well guess that isn't going to work. Glad I checked here before attempting to try this. I guess I'll just get the top box and if I still need another long drawer probably Fab up a little frame cover it in sheet metal and get the drawer and slides from OEM would be cheaper then buying another roll cab just to cut up.

Another idea would just be to trade up for the HF 56" Box. The box is deeper, and longer. Thus, the storage volume in the top long drawer would be significantly greater, along with all of the other drawers. I know there were comparo's around here somewhere showing the actual volume of the 44" and the 56" box. It was pretty close to the 56" having twice the internal volume for tool storage as the 44".

Buy an intermediate box that fits, I'm sure you could find one somewhere. I know you don't want to spend this much money, but I know on my matco box I bought a full length, one drawer, intermediate box. I know have two full length on top, like a snappy masters series. ........................

It cost $1200.

How do you go about doing that? I'm interested in drawers and slides for putting in a welding cart, not sure where to get them from. Haven't seen any sold a la carte.

I don't remember who it was but someone on here was able to get drawers for it and someone else got some drawers and shelves for a side locker from the OEM. I'll have to do the research and find out.
