Thoughts for 1/2 drive sets?

I do not have much for 1/2 drive sockets. I have complete standard and metric, deep and shallow 3/8 sk in a case and 1/4 snap on in a case. I like the idea of a case or a set. I do have 1/2 drive metric sockets taken care of with a deep cornwell set and a shallow mac set. Any thoughts? I was kind of looking at the snap on service set standard shallow with drive tools but not unless I could find it used/cheaper than new. Thoughts would be great, pictures would be even better.

Assume you want 1/2" SAE? If you have your heart set on Snap-on just get them.

I have had good luck with the Ingersoll sockets. Yeah they are impact sockets but they don't have the huge wall thickness allowing them to be used as a heavy duty non chrome socket set. They have nice big letters. They have removed their share of hardened Cummins bolts behind my impact wrench. Can't say I've ever had problems or walked away with damage.

I have a set of 1/2'' drive chrome sockets in the GearWrench brand. They're good quality and less costly than the truck brands.

It wasn't clear to me if your existing 1/2" drive sockets were 6 pt. or 12 pt. Sometimes you need one or the other.

If you don't have much need for them, why get them?

Options include:

getting a long 1/2 drive ratchet and breaker bar and 1/2F x 3/8M adapter to use your 3/8 drive sockets on.

SK, Proto, Craftsman, and just a bout every other brand makes nice 1/2 drive sets. Find one within your price range/sizes needed and get it.

My metric 1/2" stuff is all Craftsman, but I cobbled together an SAE set from a trip to the pawn shop's socket bucket. About half Proto, with some USA Husky, SK, and a couple of Macs. About $12, but I pretty much cleaned them out of every loose USA-made socket I could find, from 1/4" to 1/2".

Back in the bad old days before metrics and when money was harder to come by than most can imagine today, the 3/8"dr and 1/4"dr were not common. Real men worked on trucks and tractors as well as cars and I'd estimate 90% guys first set was 1/2"dr and the sockets in those sets went down to 3/8". Clumsy, but we got 'er done.

Today, the ratios are just the opposite. Probably 90% of first sets are 3/8"dr and they handle most of today's cars and light trucks just fine.

After fifty years of learning work-arounds and make-do, today, I've got everything in all four drives. The 1/2"dr and 3/4"dr get used the least of all, but it's nice to be able to choose exactly the right tool for the job.

SInce I rarely have a need for 1/2 chrome sockets Ive bought 6 point impacts that I use all the time and 12 point chromes. Once in a while you run into something you need a thin socket on or a 12 point and have found that in the bigger 1/2 drive stuff you wont round a fastener very easy with a 12 point unless its the wrong size.
