This Powermatic 1150 DP appeared on FBM recently. Adjustable belt (not VS), but with a Leland 1/2 HP, 220V, 3ph motor. I cannot see it run because the guy does not have 220/3ph. I don't have 3ph, but would likely find a replacement 120V, 1ph motor. I don't need another DP as I have a nice Rockwell, but if is can get it cheaper than the $100 advertised, it looks like a cool project.

Anyway, what would you do?

Unless it is a very long drive I would be all over it for $100 or less.

Since you are on GJ I doubt that you will have only a few to none arguing against buying it.
More like bring more funds just in case the seller has more stuff to sell.😉

$100??? I'd already be well on my way. This is not a "think about it" price. It's a "go get it" price. Worry about the motor later but I'd VFD it.

I'm hearing you, but remember, I cannot see if it runs. I can turn the spindle by hand and so forth.

I did contact the guy and planned to see it, but we cannot get a mutual time. It is about 45 min away.

Buy it! Even if you have to rebuild it it is is worth it. It is easily a $500 drill. If it had a VFD it would be a $1,000+ drill press.

Like the other comment, slap a VFD on it!

Hell, I don't need a drill press and I would buy it, clean it up, slap a VFD on it and resell it and could easily make some money in the deal.

Remove belt. Spin the spindle by and and see if super noisy.

Hold spindle pulley and turn chuck back and forth to see how much slop there is in the spindle pulley splines

See if the chuck spins at a 30 degree orbit due to a bend spindle.

Confirm no chunks out of pulleys

If none of these things, buy it and add a VFD

But I predict 75% chance it has already been sold

1/2 hp doesn't leave too much left if you slow it down with a VFD, but it's already a 1140 rpm motor so maybe you won't need to slow it down much more. Like everyone else already said, it's worth $100 without any motor.

I will be looking to buy it, but getting a mutual time has been difficult. BTW, the FBM ad made no reference to 3ph, only that it had a "funny plug". I had to inquire to get a pic of the motor label.

Ohhh funny plug. Somebody probably bought it think they could swap the plug and now know it's 3 hp. That's why they aren't mentioning it I'd guess. They are trying to sucker you into buying as a "good deal" like they thought they were getting. Go look at it and offer $75 but pay for the $100 if he doesn't take the lower offer.

Notice the guy in the background of the one picture ? Trying to cover his laughter at the next FB sucker buying this drill press ?

To wrap this up, I offered to stop by this past Sat, he said he was out of town, I said I could come by sometime this week. He removed the FBM post over the weekend. Guess one of you folks snapped it up! Easy come, easy go.
