Thoughts on buying used pro tools

The only mechanics tool brand that you dont have to worry about warranty in North America is Snap-on. They have warehouses and customer representatives in both countrys and a large dealer network.

They are just expensive tools. If a Techangle is $600 new + taxes and a used one is $450. Is that a deal or not, still saving over $200. The BJP1 ball joint set retails for $850 or $950 with taxes. 75% used is around $640 or a savings of over $300. Canadian prices

Buying used is buyer beware on ratchets, bit sockets, universal sockets, ratchet wrenches. In a expensive used set there are going to be a few sizes that are used the most and might need to be warrantied.

I have seen some SK and Matco on Craigslist. Say if I buy a SK 1/4 swivel socket set at half price and it needs a couple of sockets warrantied. The fussing and shipping and dealing with a company from another country would make the Snap-on set at 3/4 price of new a better buy.

getting half of new for snapon is easy, I sold complete and tidy wrench sets little over half price easily online, if it above average condition, complete or not common getting good price is nothing more than good photos and good shipping options .
I have no interest in warranty, quite simply not going break enough good tools if you got a brain thus cost of warranty on the bulk basics is money wasted.
I buy new or used purely on my opinion/liking of the tool not brand or warranty, If it does break I will resolve issue myself quick and simple . Would never pay more than half for used snapon myself and if you don't have truck driver or good online purchase then you may have some issues with used snappy warranty pending on luck and volume you doing .

I wish I knew you 3/4 of new price guys. I'd sell nearly every piece of Snap-On I own for 3/4 of new, and most of my SO stuff is in excellent condition, and none has initials or owners marks.

I'd sell quite a bit of it for 1/2 of new.

If I could get 3/4 of new there probably wouldn't be 10 pieces I wouldn't sell. There isn't the huge gap in quality there used to be.

I believe the Op is from Eastern Canada and is commenting on the high price of Snap-on tools on Craiglist, flea markets or pawn shops. For as long as I can remember anything Snap-on, no matter what shape or if it has owners marks is 1/2 price. Better quality, newish, no marks is about 3/4 of new.

Looked on the local Craiglist, first thing that came up Snap-on was a FL80 3/8 ratchet for $110 or about 80% of new. Retails for $138.95 + taxes. $45 savings.

Different country, higher prices and no competition. No private guy really ships tools up here. I would say Ebay is mainly American

With warranty, YMMV. My Snap on and Mac guys have replaced all my broken hand tools which I got used or were handed down to me. The same goes with my Proto dealers though the lead times were a bit long.
