Hi guys, been looking at deck options with replacing the boards or coating.any experiences with the coating such as behr 4x or 10x and rustolium restore?just worried about the durability don't want to waste time and money.seen a lot of reviews where it's bubbling and peeling after one season.

I have seen some really bad reviews for both of those coatings. How bad are you boards? I have used SW Deckscapes for my deck and it does a great job. My deck is 13 years old and I re-coat every 3 years, it still looks great. Deckscapes is paint like and covers up lots of little imperfections but it's not as heavy as the products you mentioned. The problem with those products IMHO is they tend to sit on top of the wood and not penetrate it, so they peel up very easily.

Was at Lowe's yesterday on other business and asked the girl at the paint counter about the "restore" product as I'd like to coat the dock before it gets bad plus i like the anti-slip nature of it.

So, $60 a US gallon - each gallon covers about 30 square feet and the dock is about 8' x 35'. You do the math ...

I will look at the Behr product before i continue.

There was a thread on here a while back about Restore, and the other similar product, and it supposedly will start peeling after one season. And some mentioned that some of the Lowes stores quit carrying it due to the problems.

There is no miracle cure for house problems when it comes to wood and outdoors, plus factoring in location. All you can do is try it for yourself, or check with some neighbors and see if they have tried it, or know anyone that has. What may work for me in my location, may not work for someone one state over. But from what I have heard and read about it, I would steer clear of using it, AND if you have noticed, at least the Restore for decks, it's not advertised on TV anymore.

Do a search for "Deck Restore complaints" and see what pops up. Not too favorable reviews. I never trust the reviews the manufacturer puts out there, but there are many sites where people have started their own reviews on neutral sites.

Here is one site....deck restoration.com http://www.deck-restoration.com/kunena/wood-and-deck-restoration-tips/synta-deck-restore?/

Just flip the boards over, you still have one good side that has seen no sun.
It really does make a big difference. If the color is off just stain it. This saved me a few thousand dollars.

Where do you live? That will have a lot to do with what will work best. Don't waste your time with the **** at HD or Lowes. I have been using Armstrong Clark knowing full good and well that I need to clean and re seal every year given my climate. It seems to work better than any of the others I tried before.

A friend of mine recently asked what I knew about these products. I have no experience either. He lives in an area that gets rain and snow. One of my first thoughts was what happens when the material fills the spaces between the boards. Does expansion become an issue or does the material seal it suitably well (across time) so that there is no water penetration of the wood?

I power washed, scrubbed, prepped, and painted my deck with over $450 of Rustoleum "ReStore" in late Sep/Oct 2013. By Apr 2014, it had peeled up on the area of the deck within 2-3 feet of the back wall of the house (85% shaded). The paint on the remaining 10-14 feet of the deck appears to be holding for now. I would not use it again. I could have replaced the deck for just a little more money, but the wood was in pretty good shape with some cracking beginning to show. Not sure what my solution is going to be now.

^^^^^^^^^^^^

I'm cleaning/staining my deck this weekend. I read the reviews of the Rustoleum stuff on HomeDepot.com. There is enough negative feedback that I didn't seriously consider using the new coatings.

My wood is in good condition after 17 years. If it ever blows up I'll be pulling it out and replacing with composite.

^^^^ Do this! ^^^^ I had to remove a few redwood deck pieces to get at a sprinkler pipe and was surprised at how nice the surface was after I cleaned it off. I figure my deck is at least 20 years old if not more and the underside looked really good.

Any coating on wood *****. In the outdoors, wood *****. And I'm a diehard woodworker. I've built my share of decks for myself and others and at least with my deck, a few years ago, I ripped the decking off and replaced with 100% vinyl decking. Azek. Sure it wasn't cheap but at least for the rest of my life I wont be messing with decking that will never look good after a few years.

I used this http://www.menards.com/main/exterio...oncrete-resurfacer-1-gal/p-2005349-c-7957.htm

Pittsburgh Recitalize on my spindles and railings last year and put composite down on the flooring. It has held up fine. We had a hail store a couple months ago and it got chipped pretty good but that is to be expected. It has the grit that others do but has held up just fine for me. I live in South Dakota so my deck has seen 100 degrees and well below 0 degrees. It is also on the west side of my house so it sees a lot of sun. No complaints from this guy.

If you stain, the best I've found is Amteco TWP (total wood preservative). I used the cheap stuff on a redwood deck I built years ago, and it went bad in a year. I turned the planks over and stained it with the total wood preservative, and it lasted for three years before I had to clean & restain it. It comes in a few different shades. I mixed an amber shade with a redwood shade 3 to 1 to get the light redwood shade I wanted. Most stains are ****. Amteco sells a lot of this stuff to government contracts in 55 gal. barrels.

In my childhood home (when I was nigh a "child") I used to use thompson's water seal.

Durability outiside you need something uv resistant. I use some of the cheap stuff (mistint oil based wood products) outside; here it fades but I tend to like the way the "fade" looks (just me). I don't know about the products you listed but I assume they are tinted or clear protectants. Won't last forever but typically warranted for a period of time. Depends on what your deck is made of but typically the pressure treated hem-fir lumber is very good warpage wise. Don't think they'd make decks out of anything else cost wise. I know redwood and pine exist but they don't seem like a widespread deal nowadays probably not any better warpage wise.

Deckscapes solid color latex stain for weathered wood. Deckscapes cedar toner oil semi transparent stain for wood that is fresh, new or not two bad. Needs to be bleached and powerwashed for the later. Don't waste you time on a fake bleach wood restore product. The cheapest generic bleach will work just as well at 1/3 to 2/3's water.

I am a paint Contractor and have seen these out perform others by a long shot. I have repeat customers and have seen it 6 years old and so on. Vega's are a good testing ground as well. I normally redo Pergola's every 3 years with the toner. They come out new after the bleach and pressure wash and then one coat of toner. Toner is more UV resistant than clear.

Live in the Southwest with a few inches of rain and ten feet of sun.

i used deckscapes last year on my deck that was in pretty bad shape, and it did a great job. I live in Indiana and we just went through one of the worst winters in history and it still looks great.
