Thoughts on highbay

I’ve got a garage that has a tall bay with 16’ ceiling and then another attached bay with 11’ Ceiling, any disadvantages to using all highbays through out the whole garage? Or would I be better off with some 4’ Led fixtures in the 11’ Bay. Just curious what some of your experiences have been in a similar situation

Space is used for light auto work, car detailing/storage and basic fab work, walls are 100% finished/textured and painted in a eg-shell beefed up white paint from Sherwin Williams. I will be using a 4 post lift at some point once I get one setup in the 16’ bay.

You'd have to dim the 11' fixtures down to make it work.

Depending on the layout of your tall bay the light fixtures could go on either side of the lift. Then, you could hang them on chains so they're lower, and then use regular fixtures instead of high bays.

Kind of what I was thinking, the high bays would be to much for the 11’ Ceiling, I’ll stick with the highbays in the 16’. And go with something different in the 11’ Area. I know I can do the 4’ Fixtures and bulbs, is there any decent 2’ led fixture worth buying or for the money is my best bet the 4’ led ready fixtures with t8 led bulbs?

Sorry about that, my garage is a a two car 24x24with 11’ceilings, it also has an attached rv bay that is 19’ wide by 52’ Long and has 16’ ceilings. My plans were to install highbays in rv bay, and then I would have liked to installed the highbays in the two car bay but don’t really want to mess with a dimming then down, only reason I was going to install the high bays in the two car was so all lighting mactched 100%. Knowing that it’s not practical to install high bays in the two car, I was just looking for a good alternative for the two car bay something that didn’t have exposed bulbs. Just looking for other options maybe a wraparound led, I’m kinda ocd and that’s what’s not helping me make a decision. Hope that helps.

Interesting - I'm looking for similar fixtures. I have a 17' ceiling , 21x24 base and am considering these 2x4 troffer panel led lights. I just posted a thread to see if anyone was using something similar. I like your high bay lights. I could maybe use those. Hmmmm.....

jb garage - Might want to include all the info you just posted here in your thread.

If you're using the space for mechanical or woodshop, those panels would have to be dropped down quite a bit from 17 ft. before they make sense.

I prefer to surface mount. One concern I have with the op's highbay lights were that they could be painfully bright to make accidental eye contact with hence the 6250 lumen output of the amazon link, just more of them. Perhaps something in between. Not to highjack the op's thread, not sure how much time he will spend in the rv high bay area, those highbays might be perfect but for me it is a hobby garage and I'll have some garage art and other stuff on the walls that will make people look up, hence the concern on retina burn.

I'm interested to see what you go with as I have a similar setup/dilemma and am considering the exact same fixtures although my building is a bit smaller. Mine is 30' x 34' with half (15' x 34') the ceilings at 11.5' and the other half at 16'. My building is two story with lofts above the work shop. I tried to figure out how to step my ceiling in Dialux but couldn't figure it out....or more likely didn't spend enough time to figure it out. Please keep us posted on what you end up deciding to go with!

I recently did a layout using the 80W 10,400 Lumen LumeGen hung at 10.5' mounting height and it worked out nicely with ~9' center to center spacing. Ended up wth 104fc @ 30" workplane. So my previous comment about requiring a dimmer at 11' is incorrect.

Sounds good thanks for the info platonic, I ended up sticking with highbays in my tall rv bay, and then went with some led strip lights from bees for the lower bay, all worked out great and have tons of light. I may add a few more highbays as I only have 8 wired in as of now, but couldn’t be happier with the highbays that are 110w 15,700 lumen thanks again for all the info, I move in next Monday and will post some pictures next week

Thanks guys, I look forward to seeing the pictures. Based on platonic's comment I may just stick with highways throughout. At the 9' OC spacing and how my beams and joists are set up I'm thinking 12 total would work out pretty nicely. Thank you both for the info!

I hung my first high bay last week along the peak of my garage. It's the 110 watt Diva from Bees. The lens is 14' 10" off the floor. It's very difficult to look at directly with my 51 year old eyes. Can't imagine it at 11' without significant dimming.

I used the 4' fixture/tubes from the Best Light Fixture sticky along the outer rows. They are hung at 11' and are perfect there. I plan to use the garage for auto maintenance and hobby restoration/light fabrication.

Lately ceiling heights between 10' and 12' are falling in a zone where cost for 4ft strip lights ends up being about the same as linear low bay fixtures (to achieve equivalent fc @ work plane).
