Thoughts on older Snap-On box

Came across this Snap-On box on the local Craigslist this morning for $750.

The limited amount of searching I have done leads me to think that the top box is a KR537. Haven't looked into the bottom yet. Basically looking for general thoughts and opinions on this setup, as I plan to do more research after work.

I'm also considering asking the owner if would trade it for a John Deere LT166 that I'm picking up tonight. Deck belt is shredded, but it's a simple enough fix. I've done the maintenance on this mower for the last 5 years and the guy is ready for a new one. Just recently put new blades, all three deck spindles and pulley brakes on it. I have no need for the John Deere as my dad and I each have a Gravely 16-G.

Well it says cash, so don't get too excited about trading for a tractor. I bought a really nice 3 piece stack Mac setup that looks to be same size with a locking pry bar box and a side tray for $500. I don't think I'd pay $750 for that, but that's just me.

Schurkey: I emailed the guy asking for model numbers and what the drawer slides are but havent heard back yet.

gdocktor3: Appreciate the input. I was thinking it might be a little high for a single bank. You are correct in that the owner probably won't be interested in the mower, but never hurts to ask. Got lucky a few years ago, traded another John Deere mower for a Coats 40-40a tire changer and Snap-On spin balancer when the ad said cash. Probably won't get lucky like that twice but it's worth a shot.

The top is a KR 537, the bottom is a KR 557. They are friction slide boxes from the '80s. Very well built and will last your lifetime but $750 is too high. $500-550 is a reasonable price range for those boxes.

Yep. Good advice right here. I've owned a pair of these and I like the bottom box more than I did the top. I picked up my set for 250.00 missing a drawer out of the top box. Here's one local that is still to high:

67Galaxie and FJ thanks for the info and input. I find it amazing that within a half hour of posting, I have confirmation of the model numbers and a fair price range. Thanks again guys.

Bottom looks like a KR-665, I have one and it's a great box I wouldn't buy if it is friction slides though. If it's a good deal grab it. I'd love to have the top for mine.

FWIW

it looks to be in decent condition, i dont think i'd give $750 for it.

around here, $750 would be at the low end of the price range,
but everything is solid gold on CL .

your local market may be different.

Zkling says... when a craigslist ad says
"You won't find a better deal on a........".

Almost always it is incorrect!

Your money, your box, your decision; however, those of us who've worked out of friction slide boxes for fifty years kinda wonder if one's man card is current.

Snap on and many other old brand friction slides should not be a deterrent. They work amazingly, for a very very long time.

Exactly, I also had and old top box with completely worn out, They were a pain to use even after being greased. For that reason I would never buy another friction slide box, It is only my opinion, also if they are friction and were well maintained they can be as good as roller bearings.
