I am going to look at this this weekend, any thoughts on what it is like brand, tank size, any specs? Is it worth it you guys think? The guy was at work when I called, he's gonna call back tomorrow to talk. Thanks

Any compressor I get is gonna get the intake i saw on here with the pipe elbows and good filter for noise, not too terribly concerned with noise level. I'm in the garage! hahaha i am looking at a 60 gal ch compressor from tractor supply, but that will be a lot more expensive. how many friends should I bribe to help move this? also, my wife thinks ill be wasting money, what do you think?

USMCdodge, where you located? I'm an instructor on nas pensacola right now, a sgt.

That thing looks like it has live a hard life supplying air for a nasty old shop.
You don't want 250' of hose, you want to plumb your garage with pipe with drops to connect hoses.

Bottom line: I don't think it's worth $350.

I'd take $250 cash in the pocket and say the belt guard is missing. OSHA wouldn't approve of that. Check the oil and see if not knocking on the compressor. Take three people for moving; 2 healthy biguns and one to carry the Band-Aids and to shut the tailgate.....TIM

It kind of looks like a Quincy pump to me. I agree with USMCdodge that it may be a single phase - it looks like the motor has caps on it. If it is a Quincy 325 or 310 it may be worth $300.

Its obvious the belt guard is missing. Does this look new to anyone like the guy is mis representing anything? If you were selling and he came to you with that **** you would piss about him being a low baller. I would see if the oil is half way clear, fire it up, see how it works. I would say this is 2 stage, one similar for 3 or 4 times as much I am not risk adverse and can deal with used equipment but even if its half worn out its probably well worth the asking price. If its not knocking it probably last a good long time. The paint doesn't mean squat.

I can't plumb the garage, I move every few years as i am an active duty marine. I will just get a different 50 foot hose and sell the other if I pick it up. I will try and make a guard for it too, I need projects. I assume it needs 220v right? 30 amp?

It's a Quincy, and IMO, it is worth asking price.

Looks like that to me too. I like the double V belt pulley. Nice setup. The price isn't ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure that's a single phase (220V) motor too. 3 phase wouldn't have the two capacitor humps.

Nice find, IF the tank is in good shape, and it builds pressure well.

What should I be checking with the tank? and besides oil clarity and pump noise, anything else to check?

Sorry, I am a noob when it comes to compressors. I really want to just buy a big enough one to never need to mess with a new one for many years.

Ok, so I have been looking around on the net, and I had a question about wiring. Do I need to hardwire this thing in, or can I plug it in? Hardwiring is pretty much a deal breaker then I'll have to get a smaller compressor.

Even if he had it hard wired in, you can change that to a plug. No issues.

Ask him how often he drains it. If he goes "Huh? It will be heavy, and that might be why hes selling it (Easy fix...). Don't be afraid to ask him why he's selling.

How big of circuit you got to plug this in to. Comps may need a specialized circuit, plug or not? This motor needs a FLA rating of less than 25 to run on a 10 wire circuit. This probably isnt the right comp for you if moving on occasion is a factor.

Yeah I think I am going to have to take a pass on it. The more I learn the more I think its going to be more trouble with me moving and all than its worth. One day when I'm stationary I'll upgrade to a big compressor. I'm looking at one of those Morgan reconditioned from northern tool now. Price is still very good even with the added two year warranty. Shipping is a bear though.

Thank you to all who have offered advice, I appreciate it.

Ok well I am going to see it tomorrow. Here's the rundown on what he told me: single phase, 220v, he got it from someone in the late 80s. Has a small leak on the cylinder head. He says it runs like a champ and puts out tons of air, its a two cylinder pump. Thoughts?

Single phase is good and what you'll need. 220 is expected and you'll have to have a suitable circuit for it. You can wire this with a plug and install a 220 30 recepticle. Age is really unimportant to the pump but may affect the tank if it had water sitting in it. If it runs without knocking, builds pressure well and everything seems to be working well, then there you go.

The small leak in the cylinder head hopefully means a gasket (this isn't unusual) and would require a gasket kit. Two cylinder likely means two stage which again, is good. Quieter and better compression with less moisture.

Good luck -- hope it's a find!
