Curious if anyone has done it this way. I know the 18" cabinets are not as deep as the 56", but figure this might be a better way to go vs. one 72" and one 18". Debating the two right now.

from a pure storage perspective, in terms of cu. in. = the 72" is the most expensive. You get the least cu.in. per dollar on the 72". The bang for the buck is two 44s bring most cu.in. per dollar. I think i just want a 56" to get the wider drawers. Looking at it in the store, the only difference between the 56" and 72" is the top drawer is wider. All the other drawers would match identically the 56". so I got the idea of a 56" with an 18" add on each side would be about 100 more. im going to put it together in a spreadsheet.

with price increase on end cabinets it not such a great buy for 16" depth drawers on hang on cabinets.
72" is big box unit while 56" and hang on cabinets is easier transportable package.
Do prefer the 72" layout though .
Most important thing is drawer layout for your tool needs .

Although the 18" box is expensive per cu. inch I use a couple as free standing boxes under/ next to my work bench. Great for storing layout tools, micrometers, gauges, etc. for regular tool storage, 16" depth just doesn't work for me

Its tough to tell from my phone, but when i bought my last few tool boxes i almost went with HF because from what i remember they offered a ton of drawers compared to others. But... All of the drawers were small.... Like... They wouldn't fit any tool that was bigger than an inch tall. If you need 20 drawers to store wrenches and screwdrivers it would be cool, but i wanted to store larger items.
