So I was drilling some holes in the frame of my '54 Ford the other day, and my ancient, cheapo drill crapped out on me. So I'm looking for a replacement and my buddy recommended this http://m.lowes.com/product?langId=-...6473&store=1186&view=detail&nValue=4294707836 set, which he owns. I would be using the tools for light metal fabrication, some work on old cars, and also maybe some work on new cars. However I may do some small home improvement jobs from time to time. It would be nice if I could buy an impact wrench that would run off that battery too.

Anybody out there have this set? What are your thoughts? Is there another set that would work better for my needs? Will the drill stand up to drilling decent size holes in 1/8" steel?

200 bucks, i wouldn't just mho, most of those kits are fluff..the only thing i've ever used in those kits are the drills so i ignore those now.

whatever you decide be sure to pay attention to the amp hours of the batteries! A lot of the sales kits come with low ah batteries, like year or so ago i got the makita lion impact, drill kit onsale at hd (think it was 139 or 169 or something)...it's only after you get home you realize it was a deal because of the 1ah batteries. Which is great for home owner stuff, but lots of steel drilling...dunno i usually go through the batteries pretty quick on that type stuff and switch to the corded....it'll burn through the juice pretty quick unless you have a 3ah battery or something.

I work for a general contractor doing pretty much anything he can think of and I have the cordless Rigid impact driver, drill/driver, circular saw, recip saw, and a corded recip saw and I have had very few problems going through anything. I bought the drill combo kit with the 1.5 amp hour batteries. They work well when driving screws, drilling wood, or thin gauge metal. But with the 3.0 amp hour batteries I haven't had many problems going through thicker stuff. Plus I registered all my Rigid products for the warranty program. It's a little cumbersome with having to send proof of purchase in but it's worth it in the long run. With that said, they don't make cheap tools. They're high quality tools that I've been able to use and abuse every day at the job site.
