Thoughts on this Snap On Box?

Hi All!

I am looking at this Snap On box off of FB marketplace. The poster did not list the model numbers for it, but he says that it measures 57" tall, 40" wide, and 20" deep with 11 ball bearing drawers. Looks like there is some surface rust on the bottom of the box/bottom drawer. He is asking $800 for the set, which seems overall reasonable.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what the box is worth, or if it is worth picking up? I am considering going the used Snap On route or buying a new HF box. Age old question, I know. Any input is greatly appreciated!Snap On Box.jpgSnap On Box 2.jpgSnap On Box 3.jpg

I believe that to be a Heritage series stack - KRA - although they don't match up to the current drawer configurations. Some will tell you they are lighter duty and not as well built as other series. I have a KRA 4810 in my garage and like it very well. The only thing I'd change is I'd go to the 4114 for the full width drawers like what you have pictured.

As far as price goes, you likely won't find top and bottom for less than $800, at least in my area. I'd give $500 for just the bottom if it was close to me, but would certainly try to beat him up some for the work you'll want to put into stopping the pitting/rust from progressing.

Welcome to Garage Journal. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Something else to consider, the USG's aren't the bargain they were 5 years ago. They're almost as well build, but significantly more expensive, from what I see.
I saved up my cash in anticipation of the series 2 boxes being clearanced. Apparently everyone around me did the same and they were sold out the first day.

I'm hoping to get a 25% comeback coupon but the price is a little steep for me.

That KRA is no better than the low quality you would get from any big box store. I wouldn't pay that for a used box. There is a huge difference between that and the KRL series.

I think that square rectangular side handle pre-dates the KRA series. I'm not sure unless I dig into some old catalogs.

I have bought and sold many toolboxes. If that SnapOn box were close, I would buy it in a New York minute. It would sell for more than twice of the asking price, here.

Go and get a good look/feel of it.
Then make an offer on the condition it is in.
Pictures tend to hide a lot, never put much stock in them.

Iwould pay maybe $500 for the pair. You are going to have to weld that bottom box to keep it from racking.
I have both of those as well as 3 other KRA boxes. They are decent hobbyist boxes. I would go with a longer bottom box with deeper drawers if I was going to work out of it professionally.

My KRA has a black tubular handle. I think I bought it a dozen or so years ago.
@OP $800 seems pretty fair to me. The rust should be addressed and a potential bargaining point.
I don't think you'll be disappointed with the KRA. My only beef is the plastic drawer latches, which reminds me I need one now.

I think that's the same as my box overall I'm really happy with aside from the fact that I need a bigger box. Not thrilled with depth of the shallow drawers. I spent $1000 for the set but it was loaded with tools. Right place at the right time sort of thing. Sold most of the tools and made my money back a few times over so boxes were pretty much free. I replaced all the drawer slides with new ones from Snap-on. I think that cost about $350-$400. Those boxes are way better than the Harbor Freight boxes IMO. I haven't had a HF box but I look at them all the time. Everytime I get the itch I open a drawer and rack it side to side and leave happy I have a used Snap-on. In fairness the ICONs seem to be much better with the rack test. I have alot of tools (along with weight that comes with it) in my box and they slide great with very little side to side deflection. Slides are about 6-7 years old now and still holding up great. That rust just looks like surface rust to me I wouldn't be too concerned about it. I'd buy those boxes for $800.

That's exactly what I'm getting at. The KRA series always had the black tubular handle. The box in the OP may not be a KRA series.
