Thoughts on this wrench? Craftsman 22 / DIN 894

I came across the wrench recently and it appears to be a bit of an oddity. A DIN 894 / German made wrench, but also stamped Craftsman. I can't seem to find anything else like it on the web, so I'm assuming this came with a specific machine rather than in a Craftsman branded set. Any ideas?

Merc, I’d almost swear someone posted that or one like it before. Was it you? Sorry I have no info but my guess is for a saw or power tool as well.

Neat find though. Not everybody has that wrench, kind of like that old single end chrome box wrench they made for a saw or something.

No sir, wasn't me. I've had this for about a week and have been trying to figure out what it may have come with since. Perhaps I should have posted it on the general tool forum as it may not be that told (i.e. being Metric).

It's probably so rare, it's worthless. So much for my retirement plan... :willy_nil

Well, DIN 894 is a German standard for a single open end wrench. So that wrench is likely made in Germany. What the heck it is for I don't know. I am not aware of any Craftsman German made large power tools that would use this. Possible it came with a Craftsman table saw even if it was made in Asia. Usually those are box end though.

I am pretty sure I have the same wrench, although it isn't stamped "Craftsman"...I'll see if I can find it.

My guess is that it has nothing to do with Craftsman of Sears origin, it's merely a European made wrench that they appropriately the name for.

I've seen 894 and 895 as DIN numbers on wrenches. I think those numbers have to do with the hardness or maybe the heat treatment of the metal. In other words, not thre fact it is single end.

22 mm is the size of the axle nut on my BMW motorcycle.

I think metrics go back to before the invention of the automobile. Just before. Maybe the 1870's. But would be interesting to know about this for sure.

Actually DIN 894 is only for single open end wrenches.

Standard: DIN 894 SINGLE-HEAD ENGINEERS WRENCHES FOR SUBORDINATE APPLICATIONS

DIN 895 is double open end engineers wrenches.

DIN 838 is a double head box wrench

DIN 3113 is combo wrenches with equal size openings.

DIN 3110 is another one for DOE wrenches but I don't feel like paying for access to the standards to find out the difference between it and the 895 standard.

Bump, thread revival! I found one such wrench as well. Has anyone figured out what it is for originally? Does it come in other sizes? I think they are kind of cool. If there are more, I'd like to collect a set. BTW, why is it assumed to be from Germany? Mine only says Craftsman and DIN 894. Thanks!

my bad guess- German made chuck on some craftsman lathe or similar, holds the spindle whilst you use a clamped allen key and a hammer to spin it off.
