I'm pretty sure there was a thread about loose hardware organization, but my search-foo skills are eluding me.

I need to get my stuff under control. I was thinking about just buying a toolbox or some cabinets, but I'd like to find what other people are doing before I take the plunge.

I've got a 7' tall, 3' wide, and 12" deep shelving with Arko plastic bins. Shelves ard seperate day the height of the Bins. You can get lots of bins on a metal shelving unit.

I often buy a full box of whatever when I am at the fastener department.
So, I need more room than those small drawers provide.

I use the surplus file card cabinets.
Small plastic tubs in the front of the drawer for some loose and the boxes in the back.
I got the idea from haw the do it at the hardware store.

BTW, I was never comfortable with the strength of a wood file cabinet.
I hold out for metal ones because of the weight.

I found this last week. Haven't figured out where I'm going to put it, but it will be better than the jars I'm using now.

Quit a few building these.

WOW! I want to build me one of these for sure! Are there plans somewhere? Or maybe a place with more pictures to get an idea of what steps to follow? I can figure something out, but more pointers are always welcomed.

I use glass pickle jars on a shelf. Nothing fancy, every once in a while I'll toss a bunch out when I feel it takes longer to search for a bolt than it does to run to ace to pick one up.

Stanley makes a nice system: Sortmaster Junior

The dividers are moveable, and with the lid closed, do a very good job keeping things in their bins. They also have locks on the sides that can link a few of these together, so you can carry 2 or 3 at once using just one handle.

I bought a few of these for nuts, bolts, washers, screws, wall anchors, ethernet connectors, BNC, coaxial, wire nuts, compression connectors, wire staples...pretty much all the loose stuff I had in a couple dozen boxes. My next job is to build or buy something like above where they can just slide in.

Throw all loose nuts, bolts, screw etc into a "homer" bucket. When you need something, dump bucket onto shop floor and search through. If you can't find what you need go buy a bunch to add to bucket. Repeat every time till you need to add another bucket

I just picked up some Durham metal storage bins and a 6 drawer pullout. about $12 for the storage bins and $60 for the 6 drawer through warehouse deals. not cheap, but I hope to get years of service out of them.

That Durham cabinet is now $112 at Amazon, but $75 at Zoro. Wait on a coupon, and it should be just right.

I use Durham stuff at work, and it's just fine.

Somewhere on here I posted more details. I can get you some dimensions. The main frame is made form 80/20 extrusions. The slides for the drawers are machined aluminum bar stock. I can provide the drawings for the drawer slides if needed. I would even machine these if there was enough interest, but I am not sure it would be cost effective.

After pricing commercial steel parts cabinets with bins, I designed my own and had it built at a local cabinet shop. The bins are mounted on rails and can be removed and taken to the work area. This cabinet has 80 bins installed but has room for another 70 or so. I like my things neat and out of sight but easy to see and quickly available.
