Thread Chaser on Exhaust Studs?

Today I had to unbolt the Y-pipe from the exhaust manifolds on my wife's car. I had to heat all of the nuts with a torch until they were red hot and then they came out fairly easily. But now the threads on the nuts and the studs are all gnarred up. I'm trying to avoid removing the studs. Do you think I'll have luck fixing them by running a thread chaser on them? Should I use a chaser die or a cutting die? The studs are M10x1.5 thread.

You can. When I've done that I haven't worried about it and reinstall. For standard exhaust studs, brass nuts area available as a replacement. Not sure about Metrics.

Thread chaser and new nuts would work. Or just remove the studs and use bolts and nuts.

Use the thread chaser. Thread chasers are more blunt to 'push' the material back into place. A cutting die does just that, cuts away material leaving you with less thread left. Use a good tapping paste or oil. I love Anchorlube, can buy it on Amazon cheap.

I agree if you can us the studs, use them. Pulling the studs out could cause more trouble. The threads in the manifold may strip out and then you need a new manifold.

Once its all rusty just get a new stud. The OEM studs will have the best corrosion resistance & strength balance imo. Heat the studs up same way until you see red-orange and back them out with a vise grip.

Stainless steel is a choice but while good for corrosion resistance it makes a poor fastener in my opinion.

Clean up the threads with a high quality die.
Then use copper paste and buy exhaust manifold nuts from a Mercedes-Benz place.
They use copper plated steel nuts. M8, M10 and M12 are available. I have wrenched on MBs since the 60´s and nevere ever had a problem with exhaust manifold nuts.
