I know this has been brought up before, but i couldn't find the thread via search. My question is if anyone has used either the HF or CHINA variety tap/die sets to any success. I don't want to cut threads on blank pieces, just clean up or chase things out. The cheapest HF set looks pretty bad, but the $45.00 set doesn't look awful... it's on sale at the moment as well.

Just wondered if anyone had used them

I need them mostly when working on bicycles or Dirt Bikes of friends.

I have a cheap tap & die set that I use specifically for chasing damaged, dirty or rusty threads. It works great.

I can't comment on the sets from Horrible Fright. My cheap set was purchased about 25 years ago. It has no manufacturers markings, and was made in Japan.

If you're not careful - and you use a tap/die that's clearanced different than the the threads you're cutting - you could end up cutting the threads deeper; which would make the bolt fit in looser. :shocking:

Get the rethreading kit from sears. It wont cut, just reshape. It has saved my *** several times and will do exactly want you want. As merk said, cutting taps/dies may yield a looser fit on whatever you are trying to clean up

AAaww you beat me to it. It does do a fine job because it is designed as a "chaser" set rather than an actual "Tap + Die".
