Thread Die Cutting Help

I love to put all my stuff on wheels. Costco had these for a great price but to use them I would need to thread the 7/8" shaft.



Question- I'm no machinist so could someone help me with the protocol of die insertion in to the handled holder? There are 2 pin type threaded set screws and one flat general clamp bolt... the die has only one indentation. What is the best way to mount this or does it really matter?



Any pointers here....its a little difficult to get the thing started.

Screw number 3 goes into the one detent.

The next time you are at the food store pick up a small can of Crisco lard fat and be sure and slather up any parts to be threaded, that will make your job much easier in the long run.

Don't try and cut all the threads at once...quarter turn cut, back out, in again for a quarter turn cut, back...this will clear all the shavings... +1 on lubricating whilst cutting.

Why do you need to cut threads down that shaft? It's probably hardened. If you want to bolt it to something thinner, use a collar/spacer with a 7/8ths ID and some washers.

And AFAIK, a 7/8ths thread die goes on a 7/8ths shaft. What else would it be?

I might be seeing a problem in one of your pics.
A 7/8 die does not go on a 7/8 shaft.

I'm not where I can look it up but you're not going to get any threads the way you have that set up.

A 7/8" Die does got on a 7/8" shaft. Usually the Major Diameter (Shaft OD) is cut down just a little under nominal thread size.

It is not threaded at all. Confusingly, the picture I posted was after I had started the threading project......

Once started it actually went "fairly" easily.

There are probably other ways to secure these but I just thought threading would be cool.

I believe this to be a very high quality Die. The adjusting screw makes all the difference. I turned to expand the die as much as possible.

My plan is to make several runs/cuts and progressivily narrowing the die diameter. We shall see.
