Do you guys have any experience with solid thread inserts such as keyserts or Time Serts?
I have historically used Rivet nuts through Aluminum sheet metal with great success. The idea came from another guy who uses them all over his race car. Sometimes I use them with great success through more than one layer of sheet metal.
All of this is on AL frames. In some places have welded round plugs in place and then drilled them for helicoils. The purpose of the helicoils is just to provide steel threads that will last better than AL threads.
I have places where I have 3 layers of 1/8" Aluminum all welded together in one place. The thickness is too much for a 1/4-20 rivet nut. The layers are welded, but still layers and I don't like the idea of a helicoil that can split.
