Just got the set. It's awesome. Are the snap on ones stamped snap on? These don't have the craftsman name on then.

I have never seen a far east copy of this kit, I would definitely chance it if I was in your shoes.

I got the Craftsman 40pc thread restorer kit for Christmas on sale. Think the 48pc was full price at the time so I put the smaller 40pc set on my x-mas wish list for my wife and family. Now I see the 48pc is on sale and I believe cheaper than what the 40pc set was at Christmas. The 48pc has more metric (gold colored) sizes. Anyone know if the 40pc is set adequate for general purpose use or will I be finding myself always missing the thread restorer size I need with the small set. Have not used my set yet and kind of want to return it to get the larger set, but I can't find the reciept so I doubt Sears will take it back.

I don't wrench for a living, but never was missing out on anything with the 40pc set.

I bought the 48pc set because I wanted it, and gave the 40pc set to my father, who didn't have any thread restorers.

The 40pc set gets you:

Rethreader Taps
National Coarse (6)
1/4 in. - 20, 5/16 in. - 18, 3/8 in. - 16, 7/16 in. - 14, 1/2 in. - 13, 9/16 in. - 12
National Fine (6)
1/4 in. - 28, 5/16 in. - 24, 3/8 in. - 24, 7/16 in. - 20, 1/2 in. - 20, 9/16 in. - 18
Metric (6)
6 - 1.00mm, 8 - 1.25mm, 10 - 1.50mm, 12 - 1.25mm, 12 - 1.50mm, 12 - 1.75mm

Rethreader Dies
National Coarse (7)
1/4 in. - 20, 5/16 in. - 18, 3/8 in. - 16, 7/16 in. - 14, 1/2 in. - 13, 9/16 in. - 12, 5/8 in. - 11
National Fine (7)
1/4 in. - 28, 5/16 in. - 24, 3/8 in. - 24, 7/16 in. - 20, 1/2 in. - 20, 9/16 in. - 18, 5/8 in. - 18
Metric (6)
6 - 1.00mm, 8 - 1.25mm, 10 - 1.50mm, 12 - 1.25mm, 12 - 1.50mm, 12 - 1.75mm

Thread Files
US Thread Pitch (1)
11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24
Metric Thread Pitch (1)
.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, 2.00, 2.50, 3.00

The 48pc set adds these to the above:

Rethreader Taps
Metric (4)
10 - 1.00mm, 10 - 1.25mm, 11 - 1.50mm, 14 - 1.50mm

Rethreader Dies
Metric (4)
10 - 1.00mm, 10 - 1.25mm, 11 - 1.50mm, 14 - 1.50mm

The rubber handles for the thread files don't count as pieces, at least in the Lang/Kastar/AE/Craftsman branded kits.

The 42pc kit above looks to be one of these, but they're counting the rubber handles as two pieces to up the count.

Thanks guys, I'll stop worrying and digging around for a reciept or credit card statement showing purchase. I'm not familiar with thread sizes so was not sure if the 40pc set hits all the most commonly used metric sizes and/or if the 48pc set adds several uncommon odd-ball sizes the average DIY'er will probably never encounter.

M10-1.25 is super common on Toyota trucks. That's about the extent of metric vehicles I work with. I do deal with those a ton, so the 48 piece was important to me.

On the other hand, you could always buy singles from snap on and just razor blade or heat gun a spot in your case for the additional pieces if you already had the 40 piece set.

I have the Craftsman set, a semi-complete tap and die set, and access to the shop's complete tap and die set. It's rare that I don't have what I need, but in a pinch (I don't recommend doing this regularly) you can make thread restorers. Take the bolt and cut slots in it very carefully so that it looks like a store bought restorer, and voila -- thread restorer. It works! Just use caution. When I was first shown this trick I made the mistake of rushing through it and seriously screwed up my existing threads.
