Threaded Rod For a Puller

At the flea market I found a 2 jaw puller with a missing center shaft. It is 5/8" NF thread. I'd like to make a shaft for it and have a few questions:

1. Is this material good enough or do you recommend something else (cost is a consideration): http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/detail.ex?sku=47778&ucst=t

2. I have a large USA die. (Again from the flea market for $1) Will that cut the threads OK?

I figured that I could weld a few grade 8 nuts on the top of the rod once complete.

Thanks for the help.

if you got a good sharp die the drill rod can be threaded It is in its annealed state. Key is a good sharp die and a lot of thread cutting oil. Not only is it oil hardening it will work harden while trying to run a die over it. I think I would go along with bluebolts suggestion. make sure you get you a swivel foot for the bottom so it dont walk and bend the rod

How long of screw? Mcmaster Carr has a 5 1/2 5/8 - 18 for $7.95 and a 13" one for $38.02. Search under forcing screws or puller screws.

For occasional use any threaded rod is good enough for that use.

If you try threading a few inches of rod with a die, likely it will be "drunken" or "wonky".

Three pullers that are shop made and have been in occasional use for some thirty years and lots of life left in them.............

Just wanted to say thanks for all of the suggestions. Knowing what it was called was the key. I ordered one from McMaster for ~$8 that worked perfect.

Again thanks for the ideas and information.
