Early this morning everything was fine, but now at 6:55am many of the threads under general tool discussion are in Chinese or Japanese symbols. All the other pages were normal English. Anyone else have this problem or know why it's like this? Is it my iPhone?

Do not reply to any of them! They are spam and a mod will be in soon enough to ban the user and delete the threads. I reported a couple of the threads. We get under attack here from time to time.

Kim Jong Un just joined. He's going for a record post count. I think it might be my fault for making fun of his haircut.

same thing happening on other sites. PAGES of the stuff.
weird thing is to watch how many people "view" them. Like a post with the subject in Chinese will magically have a readable message. I guess that's why scams work - they prey on curiosity. :headscrat

If North Korean tools are anything like North Korean rockets, stay away from them since they are all but guaranteed to catastrophically fail immediately upon use!

^^^^ is this in itself spam? Disguised to lure us in...:headscrat

Multiple threads started in succession by the same user is usually an indicator of Spam.

:see:

We seem to have a spam problem in the general tools discussion board...

It's hard for me to believe there isn't some filter in the forum software that can be used to weed out this type of attack. If there isn't, there should be.

vBulletin does have a lot of tools. But that's what bots do, they keep trying everything until something works.

Woah... Sorry for the disruption fellas...

Seems like someone from Korea thought it would be fun to create thousands of bots that made accounts on garagejournal.com and then posted spam (in Korean no less) all over the forum.

I've got most of it cleaned now, but you might see some more pop up today.

I'm on it... Just report what you see...

And sorry for the trouble.

I've actually never seen anything like this... They created over 25,000 accounts overnight. Gonna take some heavy lifting to clear them all, but we are getting close.

no man thank you guys for being patient...
What this probably means is that we are gonna have to get off of Vbulletin soon and go to Xenforo like we have done on jalopyjournal.com. It's a **** ton of work and will initially piss plenty of you off, but once you get used to it, it is so much better than VB.

I'm a moderator for forums on a computer technical website and we've been getting these Korean language spam messages for some time now. Recently it seems to have abated but they seem to have found these forums. We also get a bunch of Arabic written spam mostly for appliances or some such.
