Three year old Rudd heat pump question

It's getting in the twenty's over night, I've read these go through a defrost cycle but is this amount of water normal? About 1/2" of ice.

Yes, quite normal. The lower the temperature gets, the less humidity is in the air, the less it will freeze up, worst will be around the freezing point.
