Ti needed

Anyone happen to have a piece of 3/16-1/4 thick by 3" wide by 28-30" long piece of 6Al 4V plate around that they would like to sell me?

There has to be a pack rat or fabricator on this fine board that has this taking up space. (I hope.)

The local place I buy all my 304 (qty. 50 18-20ft lenghts at a time) from doesn't carry Ti but the place I buy all my stainless hardware (Fastenal) said they could order me a piece, no problem. They are always trying to get my stainless stock business too. Well...

They gave me a quote of 3.7 lbs @ roughly $290.00. I get the piece and it weighs 4.7 lbs and is not the right width and thickness (5/16" thick and 3 1/4" wide) They supplier doesn't want it back even though the gave me a lb of Ti for free. I don't have the tooling to cut that much Ti stock down to the right size. The whole point of Ti in this case was the weight savings over the 304.

So they finally return it to the supplier to exchange it for the right size. They now refuse to give me a peice 30" long. It has to be 36" long and the cost will be alot more than the $290.00 due to the extra weight and they want me to pay for the extra.

Very bad business practices as far as I am concernen. With service like that it doesn't look like they will get my stainless bar business anytime soon.

Just out of curiosity, what the hell do you guys cut the Ti with? I'm thinking a dremel and a cutting disc isn't gonna do much here...

TI cuts pretty well with standard machine tools. I don't know about this specific alloy, but basically every TI I have ever cut machines similiarly to a gummy stainless. It's glorified aluminum, basically, but tougher....and the chips can catch on fire!

We can and do cut it and punch it but it is very hard on the blades and punches so I like to keep the cutting to a min. The 304 is hard enough on them.

I don't have the milling tool to take off an .125 off the thickness.

I found a place with pretty good pricing (a lot better than I have seen yet) so I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for looking.

We wear a kelvar vest to punch the holes in 1/4" 304 tabs.

i wouldn't wanna be that punch guy... we are experiemnting using ti driveshafts in our formula car and i gotta tell you it machines a hella lot better than aermet100 which is what we used to use...we outsourced hubs of it once and they messed up the thread depth and then hardended it....no die no tool nothing we had could fix it

You can try www.onlinemetals.com. The don't carry bar or sheet in that spec, just grade 2, but might be able to get it for you since they carry 6AL/4V ELI round bar.
