TIG Cooler Questions and a Laugh

So I picked up Miller 330a/bp TIG a few weeks back. Started hooking it up so I can get up a welding. Power was no issue, but when I went to connect the gas to my existing tank/regulator I discovered the correct fitting on the welder had been removed and a pipe fitting installed, and a pipe fitting put on the reg hose it came with. So I found the correct fitting...

Then I took a look at the cooler that it came with... I knew it was homemade, but the box itself was clearly well constructed stainless. Then I began looking that it seemed to have quite a few fittings for what it needs to do. I started taking it apart, here is a picture of the fittings after I removed them all:
attachment.php

It even included several pipes welded together to change size, and a brass barb brazed to a stainless pipe.... The intake went from 1/4" to 3/8" back to 1/4" then to 1/2" then back to 3/8 then to 1/4. Whoever did this was either bored or needs to lay off the drugs.

Ordered the parts off amazon to make it right, however I was curious. The Engineering Genius who created this used plastic tubing to connect from the return on the power block to the return on the tank. I am right in assuming this is normally done with the same LH B type fittings that everything else is? If so does anyone have a source for ~5ft hoses, all I can find are 15-25ft and longer.

Also included a couple pics of the pump. Googling the numbers on it didn't turn up much, it appears to be a gear driven pump - 1 inlet, 2 outlets (likely due to over pressure on the tig lines) It is driven by a 1/2hp motor.

I wondered if it was an Oberdorfer pump but didn't see anything close to it on their website. If it is an Oberdorefer keep an eye out for a Procon as I have read the Oberdorfers are very expensive to rebuild if needed and Procons are cheap to find and cheap to rebuild if needed.
My Miller Radiator 1 has an Oberdorfer(gear style) and I recently found a Coolmate 3 with a Procon(graphite vane style) and the CM is MUCH quiter.

For the hose you need some green oxygen hose(or any vinyl hose that will stand up to glycol), Western AW-17 ******* and AW-14 nuts and some Oetiker clamps,

Sounds like I was on the right track for how normal ones are run. Too bad I forget to order the end connectors when I was ordering everything else.

The noise doesn't seem too bad, but the 330 has a very large fan in the back that makes most of the noise.

Got the parts from amazon yesterday. All Stainless fittings and push-to connect to run between the pump and tank inlets. I will have to connect the air cooled torch up to tig the fittings to the top plate. May get some done tonight but an upcoming cookout has more focus on the BGE table.

Don't forget that when using a cooler, you bypass the water solenoid on the welder. In my case the hoses were all set up to go through the solenoid, so I just wired the solenoid to be always-on whenever the welder is on.

Some welding supply places will make up custom length hoses for you with the proper fittings. I have them made for work. Last week, a 10 foot single gas hose was $18 for materials and labor, for reference.

:+1: I think Mike is correct, that looks like an Oberdorfer pump. Those are just a headache and $ if they need to be repaired. Unless it works 100% as is now, do yourself a favor and replace it with a Procon pump, for ~$100. Much simpler, quieter and cheaper to rebuild down the road if need be. I use to have a Coolmate 1 that had an orberdorfer pump that needed rebuild, I ended up custom building a part number for a new Procon cheaper than the rebuild kit for the orberdorfer.

One thing, if you do use that gear pump, make sure the coolant you use has enough lubrication qualities in it to keep it from seizing up. Procon's can run straight water, but the gear pumps need a good amount of lubricant in the mix to keep running smoothly.

What is the tank capacity on the cooler? Will you run a radiator as well or just rely on tank volume for cooling power?

yes, Oberdorfers are very expensive to repair, and noisy too
my neighbor offered me a Bernard cooler (Oberdorfer pump)...
"no thanks Rod, I have enough headaches"

been running city water for ~35 years no issues......it waters the flowers in the patio:thumbup:

Not to hyjack this thread, but what are the names of the fittings to go from the torch to pipe thread. I'm building a watercooler myself and haven't found these yet. Sorry, and thanks!

That is the top plate, where the motor and pump sit the random piece of pipe sticking up was to space the outlet tube, which was nearly a foot long, off the top.

It had a hose clamp around it to protect the tube....

As far as the pump, it seems to work fine now. The top mount design should make it easy to swap to a different pump if needed. I am going to weld fittings to the plate and connect the pump to these with push to connect style fittings, also providing flexibility.

The tank is around 1ft wide, 1.5 ft long and about 1ft deep coolant. It weights enough that I would estimate 7-10 gallons. No radiator, just planning to use the capacity. It is nice enough to be baffled, the return is separated from the pickup. My bigger concern is how much I can weld with only a 50 amp breaker on a welder that can handle 120 amps in

A Western AW-431B is a 1/4 female NPT to CGA 033(left hand B fitting).
