TIG Torch Help

Although I have owned a Lincoln TIG Square Wave 175 Pro for almost 15 years I still consider myself a rank armature at TIG welding. I set the unit it back up last night and realized that a lot of my problem is the POS torch (LA-9) that came with the unit. Cable is very stiff and can never find a position that doesn’t feel like it’s in a bind.

I am in the market for a new torch. I weld micro-medium size parts (10-100AMPS) less than 1/8 inch al and steel.

So what type of torch should I buy???

I take it you want to stick with an air cooled torch?

I have always been happy with Weld Craft torches.

The WP9 would be a good torch. Up to 100 amps and pretty small in size.

Next up would be the standard air cooled torch, a WP17 good for ~150 amps. I use one of these on occasion when I don't need the water cooled. I don't think it is that big and cumbersome, but I know some people that think they are a monstrosity.

One thing, if cable flexibility is an issue, you may want to splurge and get the rubber cable and hoses for extra flexibility.

Yea flexibility is an issue. I will go with the rubber cable and hose. Is this an item that would be purchased separately from the torch?

theknurl, I don't think he wants to get into a water cooled torch. It really isn't necessary in this case, plus he would have to add a water cooler or solenoid ($$$).

PKAero, yes some manufactures will list the option to upgrade to rubber hose and super flex power cable. I personally like the two piece cables, which have separate power and gas lines. I think they are more flexible and much easier to repair in case if something should happen to it. Just my personal preference though.

i love my weldcraft torches. super flexible and a good mix between durable and light. Do watch the braided hoses ... keep them clean as debris abrades them over time with heavy use in nasty environments.

Thanks for the suggestions Guys. I think I will go with the Weldcraft WP-9. Looks like a good match for the small to med size work I plan to do.
