Anybody have any experience with these? They are mighty proud of the commercially manufactured ones! Does not seem like it would be that difficult to make one. I’ll probably need to make a custom one anyway.

Have you had issues with a gas lens or furick cup not sufficient?
Not familiar with a furick cup. Building an automated welder using a 5c indexer. Want to shield around the rest of the weld. Titanium grade 2. And cool. Actually looking at possibly getting a laser for this operation.

Thought about just placing a couple other gas lenses around it. Primary use is welding caps on 0.188 tube. Tring to get as nice as possible as it needs to be SEALED. To put some pretty nasty **** into a Nucler reactor. Even the smallest leak is not an option.

Look up Weld.com on Youtube.. Long time ago Wyatt made a couple trailing shields. I borrowed the idea and made a couple out of stainless. used stainless wool and a sintered brass muffler for the diffuser.

Try a Furick cup. For a cap on that size tube it should work fine.

I would suggest putting in a box with a window in it and purging the whole chamber. Route an exhaust hose to the outside if you have some radioactivity

I don't think he is dealing with radioactivity during the welding stage. I believe he is building something that will later be placed inside a reactor.

I thought he was putting the isotopes in the titanium capsules? But even if he is not it still and efficient use of shielding gas and perfect coverage of gas around the weld as you can purge all oxygen out of the chamber and not worry about air currents.

And the scope/size of his work can allow multiple parts to be loaded into the chamber before starting. The chamber can be pretty small due to the size of work and be opaque sides. The lid one could mount an auto darken large size lens and welding could be done without physically wearing any protective gear as it would be safe outside of the chamber.

If it was radioactive the chamber could be lead lines as well?

Ordered a couple large gas lenses and a couple extra torch handles as well as other plumbing things today. In this setup phase no neutrons will be harmed. That will change when we start making real targets. Then they will contain radium and be handled in a fume hood if not a hot cell.

Ahhh, I missed that bit of info. A glove box or bag could be used for a controlled working atmosphere, but local shielding would work as well. I've worked in glove bags before and it ain't no fun. If one of the orbital autogenous tube welding machines is used, some of them clamp on and have a shielded chamber for the arc that would work well. They are mainly for **** welds though, so the type of cap or plug used to seal the ends may require some minor mods to the machine but it is entirely possible to make it work. I feel certain Liburdi could provide a welding system that would work, either rented or sale.

Coworker did the electronics. Was a little bit challenging to shield against the high frequency start.
