Hi guys,

I'm looking to getting a TIG welder, the put off of course is the cost of the gas and the continuing burden of bottle hire.

I've heard of gas less TIG welders, which may be an option for me does anyone have any thoughts on this.. Or is it feasible to convert one of those el cheapo welders.

Being a lecky I could perhaps accomplish a conversion with a bit of guidance.

Many thanks,

Norm.

I think you may have got a few things mixed up or maybe miss understood.

The TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) process is ran with gas either argon or helium.
What you may have heard is people talking about a gas LENSE for tig welding. It is a specific torch cup that modifies the gas flow for better coverage.

The two common types of gasless welding are flux core FCAW and stick welding SMAW.

Can't you stick weld aluminum....I mean al-lu-in-i-um

Yes. Aluminum can be welded with all three electrical processes MIG, Stick, TIG

I've been watching the local classifieds and craigslist for used tig setups, and half decent welders seem to sell instantly in my area. TIG and MIG. Maybe you can find a good deal locally of a pre-owned machine with a small tank?

TIG by definition uses gas that's the "G" part. You might be better served with a MIG welder or a cheap stick welder (check craiglsist). Learn how with a low investment machine and if you like it you can get something like a TIG.
