I'm getting ready to start making my tile bar top, but had a couple of questions since I haven't done a lot with tile before. Not sure if I'll use ceramic, or maybe find some granite on closeout.
Situation is this: I'm mounting it on top of three 48" x 18" Muscle Rack 'halves' that are bolted together. Length will be approximately 13', width 24". I'm going to lay it out so I have full tiles and no cuts (2 x 13 rows). The length of the racks tied together is just over 12' becasue of the small space between the racks. I will leave the 1/2" MDF on the top rails for added support, and bolt crew through the underside of the shelf rails, through the MDF and into my plywood backer to attach the top to the shelf units. For the edge, I'm going to do a wood border, set at the same height as the top of the tile so I don't have to mess with edge tiles. This will probably be 1" x 3" or something similar.
Questions are:
1) Are 12" tiles actually 12"? Trying to figure out if I can get all 13' of length out of 2 pcs. of plywood, or will I be at 12" + grout spacing? I'm guessing I'll need about 24 3/8" of width to allow for tiles + grout, meaning I can't get it out of one sheet of ply.
2) How thick of ply do I need for this? Obviously, I'll use backerboard on top of it, but what do I need under the backerboard? The overhang will be about 2" on one side of the bar, and 4" on the other, so it's pretty well supported by the top MDF boards.
TIA
