Just finished my floor. Three medium coats of Sherwin Williams Tile Clad without any clearcoat. Little more texture than I like but maybe it will keep it from being to slick, it shows much more in pictures than in person and has a nice sheen, dont think anyone will notice the texture with the stripes and logo, which is also Tile Clad. Let me know what you think.

Thanks, but let me clarify something I didnt paint the graphics. They were done by a girl I know. She done a great job, she penciled it out and freehanded it. LOL I think I broke her from painting epoxy, she said and I quote "Cutting that stuff like spreading cats*#t with a toothpick"

Actually I talked with the SW guy and we de cided that if indeed I was to scratch it, it would probably be easier to fix without the clear. Maybe a bad call but made enough sense to keep me from it, plus it has pretty good sheen. Another thing, although the concrete is new it looked like ****. I was afraid it the clear might highlight the imperfections, another reason I dont mind the extra texture, it kinda camos the pisspoor concrete work. Make no mistake I would have loved to had one of those glasslike Wolverine finishes, but all and all it turned out pretty good.

Figure your topcoat as a clear coat protectant. Imagine buying the best most expensive paint in the market for your hot rod, then not clear coating it. Even the best paint will not last long with the uv. It'll turn colors, stain and be difficult to clean. Same with your floor. It also helps with scratch and stain resistance.

The SW guy is clueless. If sheen was the issue there are matte, satin and hi gloss sealers as well.

BTW, Great work, really sharp.

Howdy,
I dont know what I would clearcoat it with, rexthane or something like that is what I had first thought, but if I am not wrong it is a urethane based clear and that would defeat the whole purpose of using epoxy to stat with. SW doesnt offer a clear in the tile clad and I would be pissed if I used another solvent based epoxy clear and it was incompatible and caused the the tile clad to lift. As it is true that a car needs a clearcoat to protect the base, that is very true, but high end automotive paints such as Dupont Chromabase or HOK are 2 stage paints and the clearcoat is not just a good idea, it is part of the paint and required. Go back 20 years when everybody painted with acrylic enamel and clearcoat was basicly unheard of. I may research and see what the chemical makeup of the tileclad and if there are any clearcoats that are the same and can be safetly used without causing any problems with the tile clad. I almost wonder if I might be better to stop while I'm ahead LOL.

Try Sherwin Williams Armorseal High Solid Polyurethane. I believe they sell it to the public. As others have mentioned, a clear coat is a must. Use a respirator as this stuff could bring down a rhino.

Great job! IMHO I would clear coat over it. That will protect the epoxy and the great art work. Imagine a car rolling off the line with a painted body but without a clear coat! The color won't last as long without one and may color fade or chalk, as some epoxies are not not UV stable.
