OK< this isnt for the garage, its for my basement Im finishing! Which comes first, prehung interior door or the tile? The door way will transistion from carpet to tile. If I put the tile in first, the door fram will be higher which will leave a gap on the carpet side. Is this necessary like leaving a gap when installing baseboard??

My other option is to cut the door frame to compensate for the height of the tile so that the door frame sits level on the floor on the carpet side..

Does this make any sense???

Install the door first, then flooring. You can cut the door casings with a jamb saw for clean tile install. Then put up your base molding.

Good luck. Getting ready to do the same in my basement. (also, if it makes you feel any better, I own a tile store and asked some of the installers about this.)

Thanks. I have cut the door jamb in the past, but figured there may be an easier way since the door isnt installed yet. Normally I dont have a choice b/c the door is already there

You could use a metal edging strip where the tile meets the carpet. It's shaped like angle iron. One side goes into the mortar under the tile, and the other forms a nice boundary.

The door will swing over the tile. I will also use the transition strip "shluter metal" as i call it. Its from a company called Shluter Systems.
