Hello all,

Great forum and thanks for all the support and ideas.

Initally was looking at doing Rust Bullet and found the forum. But lurking around and reading the different material threads, eventually wanted porcelain tile.

Yesterday was at Lowes and saw a tile other's used but today found out, they do not have enough to cover our's.

We found this marble looking one and since we have a similar one in the utility room adjacent to the garage, we thought it would flow better. But the question is, this is listed as non ADA compliant and also not recommended for garage floors. The PEI rating is 4.

So can we use this in the garage?

Thank you in advance.

If this tile you are interested in has a faux marble finish to it. I would advise not using it for a garage application. It's most likely this tile has a very smooth surface that could cause issues or injury of someone slipping and falling if wet or partly covered in snow that a vehicle would track in.

What Dakota said.

Get a couple pieces, put them butted up against a wall and wet them and then try to slide on them. Try a couple different shoes. This will give you an idea whether or not they are too slippery.

Thanks for the prompt response. I will get some samples today like Creek suggested and try it at home while wet. Appreciate it.

We got some samples and tested as Dakota and Ray suggested. They were little slippery while wet, so we decided not to go with those.

We found these and their PEI rating is 5 and the surface has a rustic slate like texture. It was not on sale and regularly priced, way over our budget, so decided to keep an eye on it and see if it goes on sale.

The texture is similar to Dakota's tiles.

Tile is like fashion....the colors and style change quickly so keep an eye out and if you can wait a few months, there's a good chance you will find them on clearance. I did that but with builddirect.com. Found a tile I really liked but was priced over $3 a foot. Watched it for a few months and voila! they had it on clearance. Got a great tile for a great price. So if you are able to be patient, pick a few tiles from different places and watch....
Cheers.

Hello Angelfire, thanks for the suggestion. Initially after getting quotes, I thought I could tackle the project but after reading some diy experiences here, it might be well worth to outsource the job. And I am not in any hurry, so will wait it out and see if the price drops or might come across something cheaper. The only reason lead to this tile is the textured surface. Even the some of the tiles people used here recently from Lowes are bit slippery with water so very picky about the texture even if it costs little more. We really do not care how it looks. So let us see.....

Hello Gerald, just switched from Rust Bullet and Race Deck to porcelain after reading the great posts. So do not want to rush in. But will keep you all updated.

Couple tips when buying your tile from Lowes/HD. Each Lowes store is in charge of their store inventory and pricing for the tile they sell; therefore the prices can be different from store to store. Change the lowes location you are shopping online to see if you can find a better price. Also make sure the tile is from the same batch if possible. I bought the same 12 x 12 tile from two different lowes and the actual size was almost 3/16" different. Check the side of the tile box and check the batch code and size code is the same. I discovered after installing a few tiles that some of my tile was listed as size 7 (almost 3/16" larger) while most of the tile I had was size 5. Good luck with the project and post pics as you go.

I was shopping (just looking really) for tile at the big orange place. Tile guy insisted on helping.... So I asked what 12x12 tiles he had with high COFs. He reached up and declared that a tile -just where he was standing- has a COF of 0.4 tile was pretty much the highest COF in a porcelain tile.

So I remarked "There is a 0.5 in a concrete-like color down there".... We walked down and sure enough it was.

Then he said "why do you need that?" I said it was for a garage floor.

"oh, converting into a room?"

[know where this is going yet?]

"No, a garage."

"Like for show? Or you are going to park cars?"

"Park cars, tools, jacks, 2 post lift, tools"

We then got into a bit of an argument... 'the weight of the cars will cause the mortar to crack, then the loose tiles will crack"... and "there is no tile that will work, you should just epoxy it".

Sigh.

When will I learn? "oh, no- Im good, dont need any 'help'"

;)

Sad to say that a lot of employees at the HD don't know jack about anything. You do come across the occasional expert though. I found an electrician (retired) at our local HD and this guy knew his stuff backwards, forwards and everything else. But truly the exception and not the rule.

yep, that's it. Unfortunately, that series was discontinued (why I got it on clearance) but the specs then are similar to the specs today of some of their other tiles: through body, rectified, PEI 4-5, etc....

Hope you all had a merry Christmas.

Sorry, been busy travelling and just got to check the messages.

Thanks Angelfire, I am almost ready.... :)

Thanks for the tip, will post the pics as I progress. Probably should start a separte thread...

That is funny, the employee at Lowes too said it is a bad idea and suggested to use the epoxy flooring they carry.

I took my tablet in and showed the nice lady in flooring at HD my garage and workshop.

She was amazed and said they are seeing more and more people looking at tile for garages.

But so far, I have not heard one positive response from those I mentioned. Glad to know it is getting popular. Thanks for posting your experience and all your support in this forum.
