Tiling Bathroom With 2 Layers 1/4” Cement Board

I have the opportunity to get 1/4” cement board for free to use in my gutted bathroom. Can I use two layers of 1/4” in place of one sheet of 1/2”? Free is free, right?

Yes, but I would comb out thin-set after the first sheet is up and bond them together.
