Hello,

I am having porcelain tile installed on my floor and my installer has removed the 6 month old linoleum in the kitchen.

However, there is still glue residue and some paper from the linoleum. It is not a bare clean concrete slab.

Will I run into future problems with the tile not adhering properly?

From my research I have read it is ok, others say to remove everything completely, and some say to use a modified thin set. The thin set we are using is laticrete 252 silver.

Please help, thanks.

I'm no floor guy but it seem to me you should remove everything. Cause if you don't and the tile starts lifting how is your floor guy going to handle it ?
I am in construction and see guys take short cuts all the time and usually it's the home owner who gets shafted.

Is it worth the risk ?

Remove it all.

Can you elaborate why? Thanks

mygarageone,

Its does feel like he is taking a short cut. I told him I wanted everything removed completely and he said he would but failed to do so. Such a headache with workers who take short cuts.

Yes you will run in to issues later on,

you need consistently cleaned and etched concrete for the various adhesives used for flooring. Paper and glue residue are not a basis for the foundation you need to have a successful floor installation.

clean it all, then etch and then install your new flooring

Have him use a cup grinder with dust shroud and a vacumn attachment. Plastic off the cabinets and doorways. That's the best way to prep a floor, it'll also open up the "pores" of the concrete for a better bond. It sounds like a lot of work, but doing things properly usually are!

Alright guys,

Just to update everyone, I told my installer I wanted all the adhesive removed and was not happy with the way he left it. He said it was fine, I am his client and if I am not happy he will change it. He did sound disturbed.

My wife told me he started cursing after I hung up on him for a good 10 min. I was at work and the wife was at home with him. After work I came back and it was about 90% removed. I am fine with this, the leftover is really stuck on and I am basically shaving the concrete at this point to remove the adhesive, its also less than 1 mm thick. So being the nice guy I am, I did him the favor of rolling Red Guard to the kitchen area.

It just seems you have to be on top of these guys and get upset in order to get your point across. They also try to do the work fast and cut corners whenever they can. Its frustrating.

Thanks for all your help guys. :)

haha, yeah, more like Papa didn't like it. She wants the backyard landscaped and I could not stand the carpet and linoleum around the house. Its a brand new house we bought 6 months ago.
