Hey everyone, long time lurker and I finally have something to contribute just wanted to share my building we started on Wednesday. Going to have spray foam insulation, 5" thick concrete floor, 3/4 bathroom, 100 amp service and a loft on one side of the shop. Thanks for taking a peek.

Little update on the building. These guys are absolutely flying! Day 4 they installed all the metal on the roof and finished framing out for the overhead doors and windows. Day 5 they starting wrapping the building, per my request as I didn't want the foam stuck to the walls if I ever needed to replace a panel. They're tentatively planning on being finished within 7 working days. They'll come back after the walls are foamed to hang the ceiling inside and do blow in insulation.
The colors we went with are, burnished slate on the roof, soffit, outside corners, walls are burgundy. Overhead doors will be burnished slate as well

It's hard to tell in the pictures, they make the building look more Brown and gray. Here's a close up that shows them better

Looking good! My 50x60 build will be trailing yours by a few weeks it seems so I will be following this very closely as they are very very similar in size and finish!

Thanks. I'll keep posting as things progress. Sometimes I feel silly when I post on here, feels as if I'm talking to a brick wall

Got rained out yesterday. The crew still showed up and got some work in. They started on installing the roof on the porch roof, finished and installed the entry door and got all of their soffit material cut and prepped for today. I was a little dissapointed they hung the soffit on the porch before i could get can lights installed. Not the end of the world and i can work around this. Just appreciative they still showed up in the rain and held out as long as they could.can't speak highly enough about these guys. It's a small family operation and these guys are working in a small pond now with all the rain we've had the last few days0f4284306508ecfb7896471dfcd5d5e3.jpg

Ok is it common to just scab a truss on the end poles like that?
As far as I know yes. It's attached to each post with structural screws or 30d nails. If someone was doing bookcase style gerts I could see notching all of the posts.

Well after a week of continuous rain, the guys made it back to put a dent in the shop again. They're planning on being completely done with the exterior by the end of the day Monday. The electricians are scheduled to come run the service and install the meter socket and panel on Monday as well. I decided on a 100 amp service as opposed to something bigger. It should be plenty of power for what im needing. ( i hope) . I was hoping to have some rock delivered today to get started on the garage floor, unfortunately the guys who are hauling for me got ******* and are going to be bringing it out first part of next week.

What are you planning for water management in the area? I am in a similar spot adjacent to a downhill and trying to figure it out.

You're not talking to a brick wall my friend. Just look at the number of views on your thread. It will keep climbing too as your build progresses. BTW, smart call on spec'ing house wrap before cladding the walls.

The building site was originally slated to be a tennis court back in the early 80s. Luckily the original owners already installed drainage tile out in front of where I placed the building. I'm planning on digging slightly deeper at the bottom of the hill and building a swail to carry any water around to the front of the shop. I purposely left the building above grade, as opposed to leveling out the building pad to aid in keeping water out. My old house would get water running under the garage door during heavy rains. I swore never again would I deal with water in my buildings if at all possible

Well the builders finished up the exterior today and will return once I'm insulated and have the floor in. Electricians made it out and installed my service, 2 lights and one outlet. I had them only do this as this is the minimum my County requires for a "storage" building. (I will have all surface mounted conduit once I finish the walls). My rock keeps getting delayed, but I'm only having to pay the trucking charge, so beggars can't be choosers [emoji2].
Sorry for the less than stellar pictures but I barely made it home before it was dark out.

Well today was the big inspection day to close out my building permit. Framing and electrical passed and now I'm waiting on the power company to finishing hooking up my feed to the power pole. My fill material showed up for the floor as well. My buddy delivered 12 loads so I should have more than enough, but hey it was free minus his trucking charge, better to have too much right?b0d831ba9d4c5263a3419e4887e85963.jpg

Well fast forward a week, floor has been filled and we're close to final grade for concrete. My plumber made it out today to rough in the bathroom, floor drain and I had him install a seperated clean out if I need to dump/clean the tanks on our camper. I went with 8' of nds commercial grade dura slope 6" deep trench drain. I'll get some pictures tomorrow in the day light of it installed. I placed my drain 16' in from the overhead doors and centered between the two doors. Tentative plans are for concrete to go in next week.edd76fc3787f96b7a529371e16d01e15.jpg431111a2ed09ae703b672575d7ca9536.jpgde4d81c0449114d891972e3e273a9aa3.jpg44d9956de484e158fe608acad86798b1.jpg

Nice shop. You should be proud.
Thanks! So far it's coming together as I had envisioned. Here's the plumbing pictures I hadn't had a chance to snap on Tuesday when they were here. The clean out is for our camper if I ever chose to empty the tanks at home,or if we have company and the house is full. They can stay in the camper and have full hookups inside of the building.53ccdb2b66396d9cae6d82f5dd1cad78.jpg3061cedf9c65c3f6b603211e752278d9.jpg23656113174509e0674aeb41cda66697.jpg61e5945339427acaa4834e0990f9af84.jpg

Since I'm in limbo until the concrete guys show up next week I thought I'd share some pictures of what I was working on at my day job yesterday. we traveled roughly 80 miles north to a friend/customer's lake house to install his kitchen cabinets for him. This lake flooded in 08 and he decided to tear down his old cabin and start over. 269f891603a95659d80a12ef88ce271f.jpgb6b5dc2e1a1d7b932f9c7c6e678e3345.jpg8b1d746a20f62912cd3d024f04b33a81.jpg30bbd506b8a8a69d90a7cb13e274b1df.jpg36a195ebbee4c450e90059eaa874768b.jpg8b3cb45b4f1530a61c9422a7dbdb9ef4.jpg

After what seems like forever, the skies cleared up and the rain finally quit. The belt truck showed up at 6:00 am this morning and we had concrete rolling by 7. The guys were able to lay down 35 yards in under a hour. Monday they will pour the remaining section inside the shop as well as the approach. The power company came out yesterday to finally finish wiring the service to the building, unfortunately it was too wet to get the trucks down to the pole so they'll try again first part of next week5c9329934de3ad91ca0dd6264704f2c5.jpgb5ae7f9302d09daee8861465712282a5.jpg9b6c31f1c8427c37a57874c94c62d8dc.jpg828a51ca2c445d510f370b63d9771291.jpg2ee0115af63dcd6aa9bef336f4d181c7.jpgc062c1f4fb40005b39576f4bf68e9077.jpg

Originally they had planned to do the whole floor in 1 pour. What the poured today is "flat and level" the remaining section will be tapered to the drain. They didn't want to fight trying to get the slope right with so much other concrete to watch. I'm just ecstatic I'm finally moving forward again. It's been less than 2 months since i started, but 3 weeks of no progress has gotten me antzy

Monday the guys came back and poured the remaining section in the shop and the approach. I kept the entire floor flat except for a small section up front by the overhead doors. It was from my experience, even with a sloped floor, I still had to squeegee water so, I chose to have the majority be "level" for my hobbies ( car/truck restorations, frame tables etc).
The power company finally made it out to finish wiring up my service and at last i had power. The lights and romex are only temporary so i could pass my building electrical inspection. I will be installing all of my wiring surface mounted in conduit. I figure if I need to add or change things down the road it will make things easier.ae425c941a15e6c40ac47bf801be149c.jpge439dacfca96b8c5c282e8f1387d7d62.jpg07388b967d9a3d5bc4af9f9b76918cbd.jpg0e749621179d99710a235123482ba74c.jpg6fa084738c7b6490bb2aa414ba412529.jpg

This method of building with timber in the ground has me stumped. It seems that the building will have a short life. Here in Australia they lay a thick concrete slab and build on that. Big raft foundations and encased metal brackets for the timber.

Some pour a footing with a full foundation as well. The holes are 48" deep with a 12" thick concrete pad in the bottom and the post is encapsulated in 3/4 ballast. The bottom 6' of the post are pressure treated lumber. A friend of mine had his old building catch fire a few years ago. His building was built in the 70s, when he pulled the remaining posts out they looked brand new with no signs of rot. I'm sure the longevity isn't as great as a foundation build, I'm hopefull it will outlast my lifetime. [emoji2]

bigcow - Looks great !

Can you estimate the auger diameter for the post holes?

And, the belt truck - Pros/ cons compared to trailered pumper?

And cost per trip?

Thanks, Marc

The holes are 18" diameter by 48" deep. Originally they thought they may have to use a pump truck due to soft ground and not sure if the concrete trucks would get stuck. The concrete guys refused this option as it would have involved setting the truck up in my house driveway, laying 200+ feet of pipe on the ground to the building and then having to carry that pipe around inside the building. All of the pump trucks around here are a self contained unit and run close to $1,000 to just show up. The belt truck ran me $650 and he was on site for a little over two hours. With my situation he was able to back the truck right into the building so he could swing the belt and reach the entire area of the first pour. The downside to a belt truck is you only have two axis to move (left, right and up,down). A pump truck has infinite capabilities and pinpoint placement.
The remaining section inside the shop and the approach they just backed the trucks in and poured straight out of the truck.
If I was in a situation where it was hard to access the building, a pump is definitely the way to go. If I was in a confined space say behind a house and it wasn't a big pour, I'd get a few buddies and rent a couple of concrete buggies. They can usually haul around 1/2 yard of concrete and are compact to get into some tight spaces.569eadb05a46fa94073f7f19782b0de5.jpg961b7e6c51e0c880db8a5fa636f10c2c.jpg4f35840c43e6a79e1e8acd7ff2783e32.jpgb4c7e63ba8a2f5dca0cfffb449ef4ee0.jpg

Cool build! I notice sometimes in cold areas they place material around the posts to allow the concrete slab to move and not take the posts with them as the ground conditions change. Was that done in your build?

Thanks! There is expansion joint around the posts, I also placed 2" foam board around the perimeter vertically below the concrete and fill to help with insulating the floor.

bigcow - Thank you for a thorough , very communicative response.

Very good communicator.

I was going to get a company w trailered big pump, now I'm going to ask about pump truck instead to not have to drag heavy hose all around, like you commented.

Well it's time for some more progress pictures. My buddies were able to move some things around to squeeze me in. They started today and should be done at the end of the day tomorrow.
I'm having them spray 3" of closed cell foam on all the walls. I should end up with an r value in the range of 18-19 when they're done.
In the pictures you'll see the darker color foam. This was what they sprayed a few weeks ago when their machine was acting up. It has since been all covered.
I will have the ceiling installed at the end of this week or next and blow in will follow next. We're shooting for an r-30 in the ceiling. f4f24e626f18ed5c16bae95c64baae1f.jpg7be081ad127252ebf92a08b63e122343.jpgc6dea2eb23a361468f0f655bd8a52ca1.jpg3802d3e6df78adb701b861b7ea014916.jpg0d6b241104b5db2331224450051a6d66.jpg609d3028ec2f684ae012d3fd85c318c7.jpgc5b2a447d41246daf6dcc4042fc4aa7c.jpg
