Time for a new tool box?

I bought my extreme tools 56”x20” tool box when I was still in a residential garage. Things changed I never thought they would and now I have a 48’x40’ pole barn. I was ready to buy a masterforce 72” to park next to it but I have been reading a lot.

Money isn’t a problem and I’m getting old. Thought extreme box would be my last. Hard thinking of replacing it with an icon 73” cabinet. I am too tall for a hutch top and would like the open top to work on.

You guys think this is a crazy move?
If I don’t like the shallow drawers of icon I will replace them with deeper ones.

Best case plenty of room and sell extreme that is like new. Worst case I keep and just parking next to the icon. I would like to free up shelving in the barn and have even my power tools in the box neatly.

I went to harbor freight yesterday and icon box is so solid, drawers have zero side to side wiggle. Just feels like a tank. Never thought I’d consider icon but can’t find a bad word on them out there and sales up to 30% off are killer. Been watching marketplace and there just aren’t truck boxes available used for a good price.

I could use money from extreme sale and put end locker on roll cab too.

Get rid of tools blow mold cases.

One thing that would really help you is getting a huge flammables cabinet to put all those little things in and get them off your shelves. I have a huge corrosives (Rated for flammables too) cabinet, 30x30 and about 70 inches tall, and I keep so much in it. Paint, grease, oil, cleaning products, solvents, you name it. Can really get a lot of that stuff off the open shelf, and it's a little bit safer too.

I have a flammable cabinet you can put a 55 gallon drum in !

all my flammables go inside rattle paint cans and gas cans etc works great and looks cool !

These are going to be so cool, but hearing they don't come out until end of 26 I'd be hesitant to recommend them. I totally want one too, but the timeline is a thing.

Either the Icon or the Mastercraft should be fine. I know the Mastercraft has a nice metal latch to keep the drawers closed. Haven't checked out the Icon latches. I know the US General has plastic latches.
Mastercraft is 24" deep vs. Icon at 25".

I'm lucky my KRL is a sort of unique color, so I don't look too hard unless I find another the same color. I did get a cart for a good deal (delivered) that matches

Gen 2 ICON sounds like no where ready to be tooled up and production volumes if harbor freight estimating a year out yet.

Yesterday they raised the price from $2,999 to $3,299.
I would fully not be shocked with that tactic.

Apparently can't order ICON online. Will have to drive over an hour to the store to manage a purchase.

I bet that timeline on the Gen 2 gets accelerated after all the feedback and buzz. I've worked corporate jobs and we always got the screws put to us to get the product released with similar positive market feedback. The product usually suffered.

I paid $2800 for my SO KLR Master Series with hardly a scratch on it, new list was over $11K with the butcher block top. Guy had some health issues and had it listed for three months at $4,500. I told him if he ever really needed the money I would give him $2500, he said no way he could go that low. Two weeks later he called me back and we settled on the $2800. The HF boxes are great quality for the money though.

Oh, and I bought my first ICON tool to try out. $20 I'll give it a shot. Swivel head 1/4" drive
I usually stick to Amazon all different manufactures or Tekton.

Personally I would not get rid of what you have.
i think I would buy another bottom box to add to your storage as well as give you a work surface.

personally I would look locally for a used name brand box just to see if there is a deal to be had and if you can’t find one then go HF

i was looking at the HF boxes and really like them, but for the money I ended up buying a used snap on top/bottom masters series in mint condition

if you were local I have a MAC tech1000 I could sell you

I can read the box saying don't lift from this side but oh well.

Very nice! I think you made a good choice, the ICON boxes seem high quality and offer a lot of value. I remember someone on the HF Reddit posted how their box fell off a tow truck at speed while moving it to a different shop, and the damage was essentially cosmetic, ie: the drawers still opened just fine. They’re built like a tank it would seem.

Bummer about the end cab. I’d contact the customer service - im sure they’ll get you taken care of.

Well here it is:

Nice Looking box. I'm a little late to the party but if you didn't I would have recommended you get a HF card to make the purchase. Interest free for 36 months, use someone else's money. Plus extra 10% off sale and gain some HF cash for future purchases. Granted, you don't have to let it go for the full 36 months but you can spread it out, leave your cash where it works best for you.

If you are putting impacts/drills in the box, I would recommend one of these. I would think it should fit in the ICON.

Tried the harbor freight credit card. After multiple hours on the phone with them and harbor freight no one could resolve why I wasn't getting offered the 10% first purchase offer.

Synchrony is the credit card provider and their service was abysmal at best. My favorite call was call center person that had screaming kids in background and chickens etc. I had enough eventually as they were such a shyt show on the front end I chose to close the line of credit before ever using. The store manager made up for it on his end which was really great.

I had a blue box and didn't want another, black out of the question as I live on farm land and red just didn't suit me after all the years staring at and working out of red boxes in shops.

I looked for close to a year and nothing remotely close ever came up that was within reason.
Boxes were either beat to sh/t, mediocre and overpriced or mint & way more money than what I paid for my whole setup.

Very nice setup. Not that floor space will be an issue, since you are in a 48'x40'.

Good thing is If you choose to in the future. You can add 1 to 2 overhead storage cab for bigger items to the ICON. By simply adding a hutch and or another end locker.

I just got a 73" Icon in black with the steel top. Still sitting on my trailer as I go back to work in the morning and will get it set up. Hopefully we are not busy and I can get it done.

I think with the videos I've seen and the comparisons to Snap On, it was a good choice for me and my budget.

Congrats. I love this box now that I’m working out of it regularly. Only wish I bought it sooner. Replacement end cab is due to arrive Tuesday from original delivery shipping damage. Whole set up I am down to 3 drawers that are currently not being used.

I’d have to replace 2 shallow drawers for one deeper that could accommodate pliers on their side so I wouldn’t really gain much. If I run out of room than I would have to reconsider. I really seem to be happy with tools I have and not adding at this point.
