I'm in need of more storage space for my classic cars, as they are parked in the garage used for everyday work and they really need a purpose made garage for them. I've been a collector / restorer of the old mini for a number of years and although i've sold a few I've held onto three models. Now I need to put them in somewhere of their own. My 18 yr old son has a e30 sport and it will join them.

So not wishing to go way over my budget of £3000 I opted for a steel framed and cladded version with mono pitch roof to keep the ridge height down. Looked around at a few companies that specializes in cladded sheds but none wanted to do a mono roof design. Seems they are set up for standard duo-pitch. So I decided to erect one myself. How difficult can it be?. I'm a draftsman, and keen DIY'r, son does welding, so I drew up some designs and settled on this to suit the space available.

some pics of our current floor space, filled to capacity

the other extension built to keep an old '72 lorry i have now has a two post lift which just about fitted in

the two spaces are heated by this waste oil burner.. great heat from it

and the area the new 9mx 6m garage is going up (shaded red)

Got the digger in and cleared some top soil and stoned the area
g11_zps6bfd90f5.jpg

stoned area done, letting it settled for a month or so now
g12_zpse098dced.jpg

so went to set up some drawings and work out best way to construct it. 40mm box section was what most are made of
g13_zpsbc9740c0.jpg

some working drawings so we get it right and it all should fit together.
one 3m wide door in the centre will allow me to get the minis in, They are off the road and will be out occasionally so no need for direct access, e30 can come straight out

Thought i'd post a pic of our collection, although the e30 sport, massy 35, ferguson t20 and a mini clubman are missing. The bus, lorries and tractors are housed in a different shed. Would love them all under one roof, but cant see that happening

A lovely place you have there. The minis bring back fond memories for me, I have had quite a few over the years, driven, raced and restored.

Many thanks for posting, keen to follow your progress.

Weather here has been very damp and progress on the build slow, but have made all the frames up in readiness to be bolted down.

Has anyone ever used concrete paving setts for their garage floor instead of a concrete slab. I'm thinking of forming a ring beam to allow the frames to be bolted to, then erect the structure, clad and roof it, then lay a floor.(whether it be paving setts or concrete) The cars that will go in are old minis so not really heavy, no work being done on them in this garage. I can put these setts down under cover or a concrete slab later instead

heres a pic of the edge detail

and thinking of paving setts like these as a finish

So decided to run a 300mm wide concrete perimeter edging so I can bolt the frames to in the next few days, clad the sides and put the roof sheeting on. This will mean the concrete floor can be put down undercover. Form work was 9x2" planks and basically anything else I could find, going 8" deep with the concrete and reinforcing bars to eliminate any cracking. Bars were left over from other jobs so not all the same size, but when tied together will be strong.
The firm delivering the concrete had a fatality in their yard that day of the delivery, so was postponed. Waiting now for 3cu.metres and all good to go.

bars all tied so should be OK, angle to keep the edge of the floor at door from getting damaged

and a cage made up to reinforce a projecting wall

That is sweet! Nice resto and family keepsake. I would love to restore a tractor, but I probably should move out of the city.

Looks like you are on a farm? Do you grow anything?

No, not on a farm, just out in the countryside, with some ground, wished I had have moved the house and garage further into the field so I could have had more room to extend, but at the time there was enough space

going for concrete slab.. the tried and tested method of garage floor finishes, pavers work out more expensive. Probably will put down some plywood anyhow under the cars, supposed to help keep moisture from building up on the underside of chassis.

Looking good so far!

As a fellow E30 guy, I'm digging this setup knowing it'll be parked with a cool collection of cars. I'll keep my eyes on this one for updates!

You may want to put down a vapour barrier before you do the floor, that was an oversight when i built my shed.

Update.. Framing is now up and all four sides are bolted together, just need to diagonal check before bolting down. Some purlin rails still to be put up. Going to order some roof cladding shortly, undecided as to go for a clear polycarbonate sheet in each of the 3 bays to let some daylight in there. The roof sheets have a non drip covering and obviously there will be condensation on the underside of the clear sheets.

rear panel was sheeted in 2nd hand corrugated sheeting, as it is next the trees and not seen, gutter will be put on as well then pushed up vertically

Been a while from posting, works been slow, just getting flashing trims folded properly was a nightmare, the profile required and the machine operator, just didnt connect but got there in the end.

Sheeted the inside after fixing polyurethene insulation (which i got for free), OSB was £8 sheet and theres about 30 sheets. Nearly there just need the concrete floor laid and finish the electrics and roller door.

The timber sheeting is shiplap and preservative stained

wow! that turned out really nice. love the wood accent wall.

thankyou, was looking at the uPVC cladding systems but they were working out expensive, i prefer wood although there will be work ahead to keep it looking good. Was going for a vertical timber corner trim but ended up with some flashing. It will also help when the well and shrub are removed and replaced with low planting
