I am almost ready to paint my shop. I was on my way to SW to look at prices and what paint they suggest for Hardie siding. I noticed on the way a "Grand Opening" sign on a Porter Paint store. I have never used Porter. But I assume that since they only sell paint it should be similar quality to SW and better than the big box store. Since they are the new guys in town they may be able to give me a better price than SW. I am going to need about 10 gallons. So any discount would help.

Has anyone used this brand or have a brand they like. I know I will need two coats. One coat paints never work in my opinion. I just want a paint job that will last and look good.

As always THANKS!!!

These "no name" regional paints are usually very good quality at a decent price and a favorite among professional painters:

examples:
Kelly Moore
Dunn Edwards
Miller
Porter
Rodda
etc, etc, etc

S-W will set you up as a Preferred Customer or similar designation. Should be 20% off retail most times. You'll get notice of sales by email. If you go to their site and search for local stores, you'll get a $10 off $50 coupon to get you started.

If you're not in a big hurry, ask the S-W guys when the next 30-40% sale is scheduled. If it's before you want to paint, you can buy the base paint and have it tinted later.

DW is an interior designer(ASID) and gets her discount all the time; but I was a S-W customer 10 years before that. We used Duration when it first came out and it was still going strong many years later.

DW does work with some of the other indie paint stores...Benjamin Moore was one of her favorites back in Atlanta. I've also purchased from PPG/Monarch/Olympic here in Texas, primarily on stains and interior trim work.

I think you'd be fine with Porter; but S-W has a proven track record with me.(BUT, I wouldn't want to be paying straight-up retail prices from them)

Before I sold my last house I had to paint. I didn't know how long it'd take to sell, so I wanted to make damn sure i only had to paint once. So I did a LOT of prep work. got my sander out, too it to pretty much bare wood in a lot of spots because old paint was flaking off. I then used a good quality zinsner primer with a good brush. Then I used a valspar severe weather paint. When I got done with everything my real estate agent asked if I had metal trim covers installed because he'd never seen paint that good. Didn't believe me until he got close enough to see for himself. Was smooth as glass.

So don't skimp on prep work. do a good job, don't cut corners. Then use quality primer and paint. I had a shop once that I cut corners on, didn't prime and the paint job didn't last two years before I had to do it right. I promise you'll hate yourself if you have to re-paint in a few years. if you do it right you'll be proud

I havent been a painter for 8 years and because we were the largest buyer at the porter store we got a big discount. Sorry

Thanks. I'll have to look at the Valspar. That is what the wife like for interior. I have to check out the exterior paint.
The good thing is this is a new building with pre primed Hardi Plank. So not a lot of prep needed.

THanks fpr the info on Porter. Will have to drop in and chat with them.

I sprayed- and didn't back brush- my house and garage 12 years ago with Sherwin Williams Duration and still don't have any peeling, cracking or blistering. This was on top of preprimed clapboards. I'm totally sold on their Duration products, inside and out.

Thanks for the feedback. Duration is pretty niced stuff.

I plan on brushing it on. One painter friend of mine said it would be best on the "virgin" Hardie siding. NC has some crazy weather and he said brushing would put on a better coat. I have several friends willing to help so I hope it wont be a huge PIA.

When I have to repaint in the future. Spray is the way I plan on going. Idont think I can Huck Finn all of them twice. Painting 14 ft in the air will not be fun but heights dont bother at least 3 of us. And one buddy I dont trust to stand on 5 gallon bucket. He is very accident prone and will be staying on the ground.

So I tried the SW Emerald paint. Was told it is the **** that killed Elvis.

It appears to be good paint. It did take 3 coats to cover new Hardie board siding. I was not expecting that.

I also learned that you should alway ask how much befor you buy it. 71.99 per gallon is a bit steep. Luckly I had a 25% coupon.

Had a friend who is a painter stop by while I was working. He said I should try the SW A-100 contractor series paint.

I will buy a gallon of that this weekend and give that a shot. He claims the a-100 is about 40 per gallon.

We will see. My quest for the perfect paint continues.

Latex right? What ever brand you get make sure primer and top coat are 100 percent acrylic. Not all top quality paints are 100 percent acrylic. Ordinary exterior paint lasts about four years, a top-quality 100 percent acrylic latex paint can last 10 years or more when applied to a properly prepared surface.

Seems the jury is still out on the Emerald. It's supposed to be enviro-friendly; but that usually takes a back seat to $$$, especially exterior. Some of the pros like the way it sprays and indicated a good rate of coverage. That can be the deciding factor when time is of the essence. It's a little different for us DIY types. We can't just 'pass on' the higher paint cost to the customer...We ARE the customer.

Some of the contractor paints are almost like a trade secret. They have non-retail names and often the consumer doesn't know about them. Good to have a guy behind the counter willing to let you 'in' on the secrets.;) It was a while before S-W let everyone know they bought out Duron in the eastern US, for example.

On Hardi Board I use Benjamin Moore Fresh Start primer and then apply two coats of Benjamin Moore latex solid stain. I prefer rolling on the paint or primer and brushing it out.

Thanks for the advice. The A-100 is 100 percent acrylic. So I am told. The Hardie is preprimed but it still ***** the paint up. I will try the A-100 w/o a primer at first since that is what I did with the Emerald. SW told me Emerald was a paint an primer in one. I will update next week.

Duration, 2 coats on unprimed wood, no primer needed. I also had some bare cedar that I painted at the same time, same results, no peeling, blistering or cracking. Oh yeah, whenever people tell me that I should have back brushed because the finished job will look better and the paint will adhere better, I always reply " Yeah, Rolls Royce used to brush paint their cars but changed to spraying for a reason". I think with the proper prep and not trying to rush the job to make a buck, spraying IS the way to go.

Excellent way to put it.

If I dont like the a-100 I will try the duration next.
I was just told by SW that the emerald was the best and duration was the next best. I think the emerald is just duration with a leed certification and some other eco crunchy garbage added to it. This make the hipsters happy since they are trying to save the world and be all eco friendly.

I give a thumbs up to Benjamin Moore Aura. On the expensive side, but man does it do the job (for a DIY'er). I did our front doors in Hale Navy. The original (builder's) paint alligatored pretty badly from lots of sun exposure. Seemed the best course of action was to totally strip them. Instead, I just sanded them down to knock down the worst of it. Mixed in some Floetrol, sprayed, back rolled. I couldn't be happier for about 50 bucks. It seems to flex really well with the heating/cooling cycles day-to-day.

The Emerald wasn't available when I painted my house and garage, but I did get some of the interior Emerald about a month ago for some trim work. I haven't used it yet, but i am interested to compare it to the Duration trim paint I had used before.
