Picked up a to pro hero 2 for next to nothing and want to try out its time lapse setting.
Never done a time lapse video before so its new to me.
I have a good spot in the shop for a good field of view.
I know there are calculators out there to give a good idea of settings, but looking to see if anyone has done a similar video that can sudgest settings that work well.
Looking for a 3-5 minute video in the end.
Have no idea how long it'll take to pull the engine. It's a 4bt 3.9l Cummin's in a Dodge Ram 1500, so not mich wiring at all, but it was retro'ed in the truck, so no shop manual to walk through the process.
I'm guessing it'll only take 5 hours start to finish, but could very well go much faster.
I'll have a helper too so that'll speed it up.

Shop at my school set one up a few times with intervals of 30 seconds. Not sure how long they recorded or how long the videos ended up being but the snapshots I saw that seemed pretty decent.

Go for 1 frame every 30 seconds or minute. You can always edit frames out to speed it up, but you can't add frames to what isn't there.

I have the new entry level gopro and just tried doing this. the time lapse function takes a pic every 30 seconds but for some reason it stoped recording 30 mins into the removal. the next day with reinstall it stoped 5 mins in. if I was going to do it again I would just record as a video and make it a play fast in the edit software. I don't know how long you can record on your sd card but maybe you can set it up to a lap top like a web cam if that is possible? I have 16gb and record for about 3 hrs.
here is a snapshot I did get right before it cut off.

You don't want timed intervals. You want to capture the disassembly steps.
What do you mean by that?

Where's the 4bt going?
Into this thing.

Maybe I'll shoot video with one, and time lapse with another just in case.
What GoPro do you have?
I'll be using the Hero 2.

Think of it as if you were a photographer documenting the job using still photos. The time interval would be of no importance whatever. But each step of the job would be.

Gotcha. I would normally agree as I have an extensive build thread of the vehicle this engine is going in, which includes aTONS of photos documenting each step and talking about the process, so I get where your coming from.
However, I feel this engine removal is not typical, since the thing was a retrofit anyways, so it's not like many could use a step by step tutorial type documentation.
The time lapse is purely for fun, and because I've never done one before, so I though it would be fun to see it.

its not so you can go back and see how things went together, just cool to see.
I like how smooth this one looks compared to the ls swap. its just like a vid in fast forward

Ahh. I see what your saying.
Closer time interval between photos to show it more as a video vs a bunch of photos stacked together.

As others have said, you can dump entire section of pictures in the editing. If you have a 32 gig memory card, I would go less than 30 seconds, it makes things smoother overall. I did some time lapse with my gopro and I believe there are settings to stop the camera after a certain amount of time or frames. Just make sure you do not have one of those set wrong and you should be fine. I ran into some problems with the camera overheating, but it was in direct sunlight for several hours. If you set it up in the garage, make a note of where, that way if you have to pick things up, but would like to start in again, you have the same angle.

Have fun with it, that looks like an awesome project!

Here is one I made, it was set to the minimum time for pictures.

I have made many time lapse videos with my go pro 2 as well a 30 sec. interval works great any more just takes up to much memory on an sd. and your computer as well here is a link to see what they look like at 30 sec. you will need another battery it will only last for about 1.5 hrs .and if you leave it in the closed case it will overheat and shut down.

there is quite a few time lapse videos on my channel so check them out and let me know if you need anything.

Regarding battery life, can I hook a charger to the camera while taking the photos to eliminate the need to swap batteries?
I have a case modified to allow charger cable to pass through.
Also, I have the camera case mounted to a wall, so finding the angles again if needed would be quite easy. Would it help if I left the rear door open to allow heat to excape?
Thanks for your input!

yep you can charge it the same time it is on and I just leave the back open to let the heat escape.that is most likely why it has been shutting down on you.
