Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT Times Two Garage

Bought my first house in January '23. I've been wanting to make a "build" thread for awhile now, but I never really got the chance to get an empty picture of them, and here we are 9 months later. I figure if I don't start this now I'll never get it started. While this won't be as cool as some of the threads we have going here, I'm excited to finally chronicle the journey nonetheless. I've been waiting for my own garage since I signed up on here!

It's been a lot of work to get stuff cleaned out and organized. The shop has been full of equipment, the garage has been full of stuff needing to be stored in the basement.

The past 2 weeks has seen the most progress by far. Shelves were put up in the basement. All the equipment has a new home under a carport. (Ok there's 1 more piece of new to me equipment left in the shop) Tools and other things are getting put away. So now I can really get serious about finishing the inside of both the garage and shop.

Pictures are as they are, October '23. My plan is to completely finish both interiors in typical GJ fashion.

Next project will be to insulate the shop and cover up the walls. I haven't decided on fiberglass or rockwool yet. The garage will be done at a later time.

I was originally thinking to put plywood up on the walls, but I think I've decided on white tin instead. It should look pretty good.

Put the 420 on trickle charge while I was outside.


I got fooled twice today. Putting a desk together for the spare room, I couldn't find two of the legs. Spent about 10 minutes looking around.. Checked the packaging outside.. nada. Started wrapping everything up and putting it to the side when one of the legs fell out of a larger tube. The other leg was inside another tube.

Then putting the new engine hoist together, I couldn't find 8 of the bolts for the middle casters. Looked all over for a 2nd blisterpack of hardware.. nothing.. WTF. Checked all the pieces and sure enough the bolts were already screwed into the base of the hoist, albeit upside down.


Moved the old washer and dryer out of the shop and into the garage. I need to list them for sale and get them out of here. Engine hoist and stand are tucked away against the wall for now.

So I'm literally sitting in the shop... And thinking I'm about to cover up these walls.

The electrical is about 80% how I want it. I do have two short 240v circuits to run along one wall but that's no big deal.

I am going to have to reroute some cable to cover the walls because they decided to run some circuits along the side of the top plate instead of on top of it. I don't really like that.

So since everything is open... Why not just run some new stuff? I think I'll get started on that this week, so updates to follow.

New toy followed me home from auction. Needs tires, a new deck, and the wiring needs fixed up but other than that she's solid.

Now I need to stay away from the auctions so I can get working on the shop.

Yep! Larger toys, or more smaller toys at once...

It really needs tires though before I go loading anything on it. And I'm not doing that until I get the interior of the shop done. So I'm stepping away from the auctions for now.

Yes it does on the dovetail, small ramps that slide left and right. The new models have the huge full-width mega ramps.

Sorry no shop updates yet. Hopefully this weekend I'll be pulling cable after a birthday party.

Did a quick LOF on the TDI today though.


First time doing it on the floor. I usually throw it on the lift. I didn't bother since I'm skipping the fuel filter this service. It was a little difficult to reach back far enough to get the rear splashshield fasteners. My chest was hanging up on the bumper.


Love the Parker o-ring tools. New filter and o-ring with some VW 507 5w-30.


35nm on the oil filter cap.


Used oil, oil filter, and cabin filter waiting to be boxed up to return for warranty.


Resetting the service reminder with VCDS. Good to go for another 7.5k miles.

One more LOF on the '06 Duramax. Bit more ground to body clearance this time.


Last service was 07-22. I don't drive the truck much though. It had 143k in 2019, and it's a hair over 150k now.


10 quarts of Rotella T6 15w-40.


New Baldwin filter/separator on the Air Dog 2 lift pump.


New Banks air filter.


Grease time. I use an extreme pressure moly grease. First time using the Lock n Lube on the truck, and it was a massive pain in the *** to get onto the center link zerks with it. I think I'm going to get a 90° adapter or something for the future. Everything else was a breeze though.


I was about to check the oil level and noticed the fuel filter head is leaking again. I rebuilt it back in 2017 with new seals.


Took care of that with a stainless U-pipe. The ends of the fuel hose were a little gummy, so I snipped them back to good hose. The filter on the lift pump is rated for 6 microns so I'm not too worried about losing the stock filter.


Finally got to check the oil. Looks good to me.

No real shop updates yet. Been really busy.

Today was a mixture of rust belt 2001 S-10 and leaf pickup.

Didn't get any shots of work in progress, I was way too dirty.

My dad lost his 4x4 a few weeks ago. Diagnosed to a bad vacuum line above the transmission. The front differential is engaged and disengaged by a vacuum actuator underneath the battery tray. They're notorious for failing. Replaced that line along with the vacuum supply line that goes to the transfer case.

Half the truck flaked off onto me and the floor, but we've got 4x4 back.



Before my dad showed up I moved toolboxes and the workbench from the back wall to the side wall. I've got room to park my 2500HD in the shop this winter.

The rest of the day was spent dealing with leaves. I pulled the push mower out of storage to mow the front, I've gotta mow the back with it tomorrow. Ran out of light today. Next year I'm not putting the grasshopper away so early.

I've figured out my wall situation so I'll be moving forward with the electrical soon. Updates to come.

Time to update.

I moved some stuff around since last year. Big box got moved from the back left corner to the right wall. Work bench and welder are going to get moved to the right wall next to the big box. Small box on the left is leaving. It's either headed to the front garage or the basement.


I also got started on the electrical today. Ran an 8/2 cable to the back right corner where the compressor will go. 6/2 cable next to the big box for the welder, and 12/2 for the rest.

I decided to just do singles on this wall. I'm going to add a power strip to the work bench so that will handle any extra needs.

I also added a box for an outdoor outlet. I want to get an outdoor cover before I cut the hole out and install the receptacle.


Added 2 quads to the North(back) wall. These are on a separate circuit from the rest.


So, this garage was pre-wired with 3 separate 20 amp circuits. The 2 main reasons I want to redo everything are the cables being run along the side of the top plate, and I wanted to move the receptacles 48" above the floor from the previous ~24". I did reuse the holes in the studs. Didn't see a reason to Swiss cheese them.

In this pic I already moved the North wall circuit up inside the trusses. I also reused the 30' of NM-B since there was enough there after moving the receptacles higher up.

I still have to do the circuit on the West wall and the lights. The lights are currently set up with outlets in the ceiling, and I'm thinking I'll probably do the same thing. I just need to put new boxes, the current ones hang down off the trusses kind of far and I'll be covering the ceiling eventually.


I'll be shifting everything to the right tomorrow to get started on the West wall and the light circuits. I'll probably stick the Kubota under the tent shed..

Didn't touch the shop today. That will resume tomorrow. I reorganized the shed next to it so it wasn't such a mess.. I brought my dad's JD400 over for winter storage, along with my grandpa's Simplicity 8hp snowblower.

The Kubota is going to go where the Simplicity is sitting. I also got 2 new hydraulic hoses made up for it today.

Worked on the West wall today, along with moving a few circuits off the side of the top plates and up between the trusses. I just need to install the receptacles and daisy chain them. There's a dedicated circuit in-between the windows for an A/C next year.


Went with the fancy lighted switches. There were previously 4 here, but one was unused, no idea what it was for. I just installed 3. 1 for a single light in the middle, 1 for the main interior lights that are on ceiling receptacles, and the 3rd one is going to be exterior lights.

I blocked the back of the box at the 3rd switch for support.


Moved the bench to it's approximate home. It still needs to be moved left some so I can have the panel clear from the front.

Better late than never. I won't be taking up insulating as a trade, but it's better than the bare walls.

Got all but 3 bays done on this wall. I need to remove an old cabinet, and move my sub panel inwards before this wall is complete. I'll be doing the back wall tomorrow.

I also still need to staple the sides. I'll probably do that all at once. For now the tops are stapled.

Once the insulation is done, the walls are getting covered with ½" ACX plywood. Took forever to decide what I want to use, but that's what I've decided to go with.

I can't wait to get the toolbox pushed against the wall for the 2nd to last time. (I'd like to paint everything white next year.)

Back wall is done besides most of the stapling. I only did the top so far like the other wall to keep everything in place.

Got most of the West wall done. Just have to do some long skinny pieces. I foamed between some really skinny studs.

Friday I'll wrap this wall up, the corner with the sub panel, and the overhead door header and it'll be plywood time.

Got 4 full size sheets on the back wall.


5 full sheets on the East wall.


West wall has 2 full sheets up. It'll get 1 more full before I have to start cutting sheets down.

Outlets will be getting ½" spacers.

Little update after a long delay here.

I got my new 14x24 shed today. The shop unfortunately filled up with stuff and I haven't been able to get much done since the last update.

First order of business will be to water seal the shed floor and get some paint over the primer. I'll spray the shop at the same time, and then I'll get back to finishing the interior. Pretty much just paint on the walls and get the ceiling installed.

I also need to get some electrical ready for a future feed upgrade to 90A/100A.

Got the first coat of Heritage Brown on. Sprayed and backrolled.

I need to get some fascia trim, some trim paint for around the doors, and I'm planning to spray the runners under the shed when I spray the 2nd coat on Sunday, to cover up the overspray.

I'm going to spray the garage/shop this same color once I give it a quick sanding.

Minor exterior updates.

The shop got 2 coats of the same brown I put on the shed.

I installed the garage door trim today. Still need to caulk and paint it.

I'll be replacing the man door and windows, along with their trim.

The garage door will be painted white to match.

Lastly, I'm waiting on the fascia trim for the shed. It was special order for some reason. Might be in next week.

One more minor update. Got the new door installed today, and I went and ordered the windows.

Unfortunately, when I ordered the door, I forgot to uncheck the brickmold option. So, I can't use the original trim I bought.

I'm going to get some skinnier trim to go around the brickmold, as I've got to hide a little bit of the sheathing on the left side. The wide trim would've taken care of it.

I thought about just tearing it off, but opted not to.

I also did some caulking around the garage door trim. That's ready for paint. Hoping to spray the door at the same time, so I need to get some primer on it.

I got the garage door primed yesterday, and the first coat of paint sprayed on today. I rolled the trim on both the garage and shed.

I'll brush the sides of the trim later, I just rolled the front for now.

Fascia trim came in for the shed, I just need to go pick it up. I'll probably get that put up this weekend.

The white really brightens up the front over the old pale yellow.

Today I went and picked up the new garage windows along with the fascia trim for the shed. I went ahead and installed the trim. I'll probably do gutters on the shed, but that may come next spring.

I'm just about done on the exterior of both. I'm up in the air if I want to paint the shed door. I really like how the garage door turned out, and the difference between the 2 really stands out to me.


Also did a lube, oil, and filter on the 565k Jetta.
