Timing Light

I've finally got my 73 Charger up and running, and want to set the timing, so i'm looking to find a decent timing light, and just a quick look at Sears.com shows a pretty big spread as far as cost for the lights, ranging from $40 up to $150.

Some have a tach, which would be really nice as I don't have a tachometer in-dash and that would be helpful for idle tuning.

It seems that Equus & Innova keep coming up as brands when I search. Any thoughts on a good all-round timing light to have in the tool arsenal?

I've used many. Cheap ones to expensive. Personally I like to keep it simple. Mopar engines can be a pain to see the marks. All I would recommend is make sure it is a dial-back type.

most i have used were older lower end models, and they worked just fine. cant say what the market is like for new timing lights tho, and the quality of the products.

couple years ago i had to replace my 45 year old sunpro that i melted the plug lead off of

replaced it with a new sunpro from autozone
it's even got a fancy newfangled inductive clampon lead

This is the Innova I use. Does everything I've needed it to do in a professional environment, and probably does more, manual is awfully thick for a timing light. It can be had for a little cheaper elsewhere online, I just bought it mine from Cornwell.

Keep an eye out on C-L or garage sales; good ones (such as Snap-on and Mac) can often be had for as little as $15. I've seen many of them at garage sales that are still in the original boxes and look as new.

Either get the one Mickey has or similar. I have a Sears one like the Sun and it will work fine, good and bright and induction, easy to connect.

Timing lights are cheap, and more accurate than that. An out of tune carb will give poor vacuum readings, worn internals will throw it off as well. I time older cars by ear, use the light to check my work and I'm pretty accurate most of the time, but not as good as a light.
