as much as i try not to peruse the tinman catalog, their benchtop stake setup caught my eye the other day, but im having a hardtime finding anyone who has some of their pieces, or if there is a slightly cheaper alternative. looks like the stake pocket just mounts to the edge of a bench and allows you to just slip in the different stake heads/ dollies without tying up a vice. they are a little spendy, but for someone who isnt exclusively doing metal shaping everyday, the small footprint it takes up is a big plus. anyone with any experience, opinions etc for these? (probably looking at getting a few of the large button head ones and a t head or 2)

I have seen his stuff. I believe it is high quality, but the stakes you can make on you're own. I have welded 1" bar to some of my stuff and mounted it in a home made clamp. Slip one out and put another in . I have my Beverly shear on one, I will put my bead roller and some dollies on it also.

Go on a hunt for vintage stakes, most of the time you can get them reasonable as many people don't know how to use them

Many people make their own, especially the T type stakes

Yeah ive only ever heard great things about the quality of their stuff. Ive thought about making up a stake pocket and either using some of my cheaper dollies or grabbing a set of HF ones and adapt them to rods for the pocket, even just to free up a hand when doing some dolly work. Guess its time to start searchin the swap meets for some, atleast before spending a few hundred for tinman ones

i've seen the #983 but not for sale

the tinman's stake holder is a joke......even my jewelry stake holder makes that POS look wimpy

How well would that stake holder work on the edge of a bench like they show? Seems like it could loosen/pull out easily.

I like the Pexto stake plates myself, and I have a 983.

The Pexto rectangular stake plate and the stakes can be found on eBay easily.

Here is a pic of my Beverly in the tool holder. I am going to redesign it so I have two on this stand at a slightly different height.
I also have another tool holder that slides into the trailer hitches on my bench so I have plenty of spots to mount it.
I got the idea from a metal shaping class I went to. The beauty of it is the round holder. You can turn it as much or as little as you want. The square peg is good ,but limited.

wait until you use a stake as long as PEXTO # 901, its 42" long, it WILL rotate in your round holder

the PEXTO #981 stake plate has holes at 90* and 45* as well as angled and different sizes too

Seems to be a lot of people whom just use 2" receiver tubes with the tools mounted on plates that fit that. Positive engagement, can't rotate, secure, easy to do.

If you want stakes hold out for a stake plate. You won't regret it. You might check used sheetmetal equipment dealers. A Pexto stake plate and stakes will probably go pretty cheap since very few sheet metal shops use them anymore.

I built the stand so I didn't have to attach anything to the bench then built the other stand to store all of the tools I use on the stand. I just about need to make another stand to house the tools that won't fit on the first one.

I'm space challenged.....and it's hard to leave a bunch of the PEXTO stakes in the plate.....the big ones are up to 60"....you can't walk past it:lol_hitti

I have an almost complete set of PEXTO stakes and some duplicates too, most live under my welders:thumbup:

i have the little shrinker like you do, i need to make a bunch more tapers that fit the stake plate for the shrinker and the bead rollers, Beverly, chop shear ect

then assault the block wall to hang them when not in use

Hardie holes in an anvil actually aren't tapered(at least not traditionally) and are designed for use with straight shanked tools. Tapered stakes are not designed to be used in an anvil hardie. I've seen anvils missing their heel where it was blamed on use of a tapered stake in the hardie.

I use a combination of 2 inch receivers and homemade stakes and pockets on my bench. Someone gave a a few old engine stands that I re-purposed into stands for my stretcher and shrinker and my bead roller. They work GREAT!
