Tiny Nut Driver / E-Torx??

So after countless google and amazon searches and not coming across anything, I figure here's the best place to ask...

I have a pair of frameless glasses that uses tiny nuts to secure the lenses onto the studs, and for several years have constantly come loose over time. I keep tightening but since I have nothing small enough, usually use a small pliers w/ rag on the jaws to protect the lenses. It's difficult to get the nut truly tight but it lasts a month maybe.

I have searched for small nut drivers or E-torx that would fit this. It's not a bit that I have in any of my small precision screwdriver bit collections either and I have a few of those assortments. Anyone come across this type of small nut, and what would be the right tool and where to find it?

Any advice would be much appreciated, this is just annoying!

I have a set of small nut drivers I picked up a few years back at a discount tool outlet. they look just like the precision screwdriver sets with the black shank, silver fluted handle, and spinning top for your palm, if you know what I mean. only difference is they are micro nut drivers, not screwdriver tips. never saw another set, and never had to use them. maybe look for jewelers nut drivers (if such a thing exists)?

Threadlocker will definitely be used once I can get it on tight...

Measured across the "flats" and it's 0.090" or ~2.3mm. Smallest nut driver I can find is 3.5mm, and yes this is much smaller than E4 size E-torx.

:dunno:

That's a good start, then the moody set maybe would be my next try. Where would I find a T9 screw? Would this be found at a Lowes/HD/Menards or special order?

Try your optometrists/opticians office.
They should have a few tricks up their sleeve for keeping that nut
on for more than a month...

wow, that moody's 5pc set is what I have. $41? I only paid $3 for mine...never saw them in a regular store, just a local closeout junk store that has discontinued tools.

Have you tried going to an eyeglass store with some threadlocker and asking them to tighten it up (or let you do it while they watch if their worried about it)?

I've been there 1/2 dozen times, they won't use threadlocker on it (though I never tried bringing it to them), they won't take my insurance any more (which isn't to say they wouldn't keep fixing the glasses I have), and I'm pretty convinced they are a bunch of morons who don't give a rip....

that plus the dying need to be able to fix anything and everything myself, even if it means having to buy tools to do it.

Blue thread locker.

Bad idea. But not for the reasons you're expecting.

Try your optometrists/opticians office.

That's the right answer. They're sure to have the right size driver for this, as it probably came with the kit from the manufacturer.

I had a conversation with my optician once about thread locker. He uses special solvent-less thread locker. Regular hardware store sold Loctite has solvents in it that will dissolve the finish on your glasses frames leaving behind some very visible ugliness (it can also soak into the plastic of the lens and lead to cracking in the future around that highly stressed point).

You can buy solvent less thread locker, but expect to spend 10x what you would on regular Loctite blue, and it is going to be something you'll need to mail order. Another option is to use the lipstick style thread locker.

Every modern spectacle mounting I've seen has used 2.2mm nuts
(they call it that but tolerances seem pretty wide).

Get a 2.2mm nut driver and I'm sure it will fit!

Usually the smallest size in any set, or buy a single tool from someone like Vessal for about $3!
