Tiny workshop in Aus

Thought I'd start a thread about my tiny work space that I have to work with until my home extension and garage gets off the ground.

My space is 3750mm x 2450mm (12' x 8'), essentially a kids cubby that was here when I bought the property. I'm fitting a work bench along 1 wall and adding storage cabinets on another. As I use this space for storage as well it's a slow process of clearing a section, then fitting part of the bench then rearranging for the next bit.

The bench is designed so that a storage bin from the local supermarket will fit on the floor and on the shelf, with just enough space for a thin drawer to hold tools under the top.

Eventually I'll have a 6m x 9m (20' x 30') garage for vehicle projects, and this space will be for smaller wood projects.

Old fire reel cabinet framed into the wall, and an old kitchen cabinet hung above the bench area

Have been gradually working on this over the last 2 years over my summer break.

Crspy Firstly hello and welcome to the GJ.

Its great to see you optimising the workspace you have, well done.

Looking forward to seeing how you progress and thanks for sharing as there are many here that do some great stuff in a small space.

How long before you start your extension and garage?

What neck of the woods are you from?

Regards

Thanks 1/2 Cup, I watch your thread with envy :D

I'm in the Yarra Ranges in Melbourne's east.

Plans still have to go to council, but I need to remove some trees before I get there. Hopefully the next couple of months to get everything to planning.

Many thanks Crspy:thumbup:

The Yarra range is a nice part of the State, I love it down there and you may want to include it in your profile as it helps paint the picture so to speak.

All the best with your planning permit.

Haha, cheers guys

Tree removal is never much fun when it comes to Councils. Good luck.

Yeah, Yarra Ranges council is especially keen on their trees, but they've advised to removed any required trees that are eligible under the 10/30 rule before going to planning.

You may have to explain the 10/30 rule as this is a global forum and many may not follow what you have posted.

Good point

Most suburban councils over here require planning permission to remove trees. Due to the extreme bushfires we had about 5 years ago the state government instituted a new rule allowing homeowners to clear trees from around their house up to 10 metres, and shrubs up to 30 metres, without requiring planning permission.

How many trees and shrubs will you need to clear?

2 large trees before planning, with a smaller one as well so the arborist can bring the large one down safely. Another 2 trees will go to the council for approval. The engineer requires 2 metre piles under the garage slab due to the hill, which would go through the trees root systems.

Cheers guys. In terms of the house extension I'll be going from a 62 sqm 1.5 bedroom shack, to a 3 bed 89 sqm home. Still not huge, but liveable

Here's a render from the garage roof toward the house

Looking forward to the holidays to be over (but not wanting them to end too quickly...) and finish off these trees and get this to council.

My architect did the house/garage ones, I did the sketchup/CAD of my workbench and workshop. I mess around with CAD for fun, and gave the architect some of my ideas, but I'm definitely not at his level :D

We had a much more grand plan initially, but a back injury mid-year made me go in a cheaper/easier direction.

Here's an idea of the steepness of the block. 20 metre rise from the road to the back of the block over 60 metres

And here the view from my little workshop on a typically rainy Melbourne day

And a quick and dirty timber rack I put up to get my timber out from under foot

Picked up a compressor for cheap - needs a good clean, and one power cable replaced.

Great score on the compressor Crspy, those tanks are made near us in Echuca and that looks like a Clisby compressor unit as well.

Thanks for sharing pics of your property now I get the picture so to speak.

That's steep.

In preparation for renovations I'll need to put some stuff in storage. I managed to find a location that allows storage of vehicles and household items, and provides workspace to work on the vehicles.... So I signed up :D

And then I needed something to put in it...

Good one Crspy:thumbup:

If it is not a rude question what is the cost for your storage per week?

Regards

Hey 1/2 Cup,

Storage is 98 a week, planning to share with a mate. We get the full height of the space so we can build a mezzanine over the car/s for more storage. The facility will also have a hoist on site.
