A friend was kind enough to help me clean up my old vise with his sandblaster. It came out better than I would have hoped. Now to figure out what color to paint it.

If you think you need something more than ordinarily durable in rattle can, "tool "gray" is a good work horse, if drab. The Hammered paints aren't bad either.

Other than that, etching primer or self etching paint seems to work well.

Be sure to degrease the vise before hitting it with paint, (even oil from your hands will affect adhesion), and I have gotten into the habit of hitting any metal part I paint with heat so as to remove any moisture from the surface. I learned this painting engine parts. after watching a few paint jobs just peal off from the heat boiling whatever was in the metal surface off I realized I needed to get it all off, and have used the technique for all things metal since...

Your vise, your time and money, your decision. If it were mine, I'd wipe some oil on it and put it to work.

I'd recommend self etching primer followed by a hammered color like Rust Oleum Hammered Black (see example below). However I'd try and find something close to the original factory color if possible.

Don't paint the slide, handle assembly, anvil surface or jaws. You can coat them with clear lacquer or wax after you polish them down to bare metal.

The star emblem on your vise would look great if you color in the recess area with a contrasting color to the body of the vise and then paint the raised letting with an artists brush.

Thanks guys. After digging around for pictures of similar vises, I think I'll keep the original color. I probably should have found some paint before cleaning it all off, but I do have pics. Does Lowes or Home Despot have a better spray paint selection than say Walmart?

I'll probably paint the raised lettering and the seal by hand afterwards.

Yeah Lowes should have more to choose from. I soak the heck outta everything I paint with brake cleaner just before painting it, and heating (blow dryer or heat lamp is enough) it up just before as well. I did an engine block this way, and none of the paint came off.

I just bought this Record V175, and I'd like to restore it. Any advice is appreciated:

- Disassembly: Do the support bars and handle assemby unthread from the front plate?

- Steel components: What do you recommend for shining them up? I'll take Davefr's advice about the clear lacquer coat, but how would you remove the rust (without a sandblaster)? Would a wire wheel do any damage to the metal? Soak them in Evapo-rust?

- Plates: paint and rust removal. I don't have access to a sandblaster, so any other recommended methods are welcome.

- Plates: I'd like a matte-finish with spray paint. Any brand recos?

Davefr's lettering looks great. Any tips for hand painting the raised lettering with an artist's brush? Did you mask it or just freehand it?

Thanks for your input.

I painted mine navy blue

You don't see too many American Scale vises, they are beefy. Not the name brand recognition that you get with a Reed or Wilton but still good vises.

Any bare metal you'll want to use paste wax on or it will rust.
