I know everyone always says that its a buyers market for toolboxes and I agree 100% But does anyone have any tips on selling a toolbox?

I have a Matco 6s 3 bay that I bought new I was given a great price but I traded my older Snap On box in. Well Now I have outgrown my Matco box but I no longer have any supporting dealer near me. So trying to buy side lockers or a hutch is hard. I would rather try and sell the box and buy something from strictly toolboxes. Am I making a mistake?

I see similar boxes to your's on my Craigslist all the time and unless they are priced around the $3000 mark they just seem to sit (used cars also). For what you have invested I think you have a sunk cost; either sell it for what you can and eat the loss or try to find the add-ons you need (new, used, mismatched). Can you buy an aftermarket hutch or locker for your box from strictlytoolboxes?

I've bought and sold about 13 boxes since the beginning of the year. even though you have a nice box, people want the snap on name. MAtco boxes don't have **** for resale on the use market. actually most boxes don't. 2500 seems to be the max limit people will spend. no one has that kind of cash laying around these days, let alone for a tool box but they'll buy one off the truck because its "only 30 bucks a week bro".

1500-1800 seems to be the sweet spot for people with cash buying boxes. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but its the reality from what I've seen and dealt with

how close is the nearest dealer? im pretty sure for a large purchase like a hutch or a side locker, a dealer would be willing to order and deliver to you, or meet you half way ect. as long as its within a couple hours driving im sure he would make the drive to make a good sale like that. Might be an after hours kind of delivery, but im sure a driver would work with ya for a good purchase

I have bought and sold a number of toolboxes over the last few years. If you take the time to clean it up/ wax it and replace damaged drawer liners then note this in the ad it goes a long way towards top dollar.

You can list it locally and in the surrounding areas to see what response you get.
You can also list it on eBay with the specification that it isn’t local pickup only.
You can also specify terms of cash on pickup to avoid further fees

Based on my local Craigslists, here are my tips:

1> Don't post any pictures of the box
2> Don't post any details, such as make, model, size, etc.
3> If you do post pictures, make sure your box is super dirty, and your photos are blurry
4> Price the box at 90% of retail, then claim that retail is twice the price you're asking, and that you "know how much this is worth, so don't try to screw me"
5> Post preemptive threats to anyone who "lowballs" you or "wastes your time"
6> Include some sob-story details about job, family or life that forces you to sell the box
7> Again, if you do decide to post pictures, make sure you post lots of pictures of drawers full of tools, and mention several times how the tools don't come with the box
8> Up-sell features like how it comes with the drawer liners, or better yet, offer the drawer liners at a separate price
9> Make sure to claim any defects like scratches, dings or dents "came like that from the manufacturer" so that those dang scammers don't try to talk down your asking price

I'm guessing you are shooting to sell the matco box for about as close to the price of a new box from strictly toolbox? If so be prepared to wait. From what I see on CL, the big boxes no matter the name sit, unless the price screams buy me I'm to low to be real. Talk to whatever tool truck you have or like and see what they will do for trade. It's all the number game, but in the end will more then likely will give you way more then you ever thought you could get selling yourself. If the numbers he throws out don't stick there is always going back to selling on your own.

Thanks for the input everyone. Sounds like I will just have to end up keeping it I have no need to sell I just really wanted one matching setup box hutch and sides. but I dont think it will be worth buying all matco products. I have thought about building my own hutch. and maybe buy some sides from strictly toolboxes and just make it work.

Don't forget to leave the ad up after you sell it and get upset when people are still contacting you.

Just make effort get 2 lockers from matco and build your own hutch off them which simple .
Would be complete ballache and expense to sell and buy new stb chinese setup.

Matco don't tend sell easily at higher costs unless A1 order and seller makes decent effort, I have 2 7525's and an end drawer hangon which cost 1,800 few years back plus running around costs.
Would be far easier and more rewarding sort 2 lockers out over selling and setting up in new box .
My expansion concept will be buy another matching 7525 box or end cabinet/locker

Contact Matco customer service and find a dealer close to you. I'm sure they'll even drop ship it to you since the Matco dealer has to get bulk items shipped the same way.

You'd be crazy to sell such a nice box. I think I would be mad at myself for the rest of my life. It is hard to get used to using one of the best boxes in the world and then go to just a good box. Why not just bring it home and buy a new strictly setup. Their prices are reasonable enough.

Judging on my experience selling on Craigslist and offer up it’s no wonder some happen because the average buyer is either nearly illiterate, retarded, or blind as Stevie Wonder, or all three.

Post nice clear pictures, several of them and they will message you “pics?”. I also have to translate messages from Methican a lot too. And way too many of them offer a rediculousy lowball offer, or want to know “what’s the lowest you’ll go”, or the best one, want to make payments.

It’s almost a waste to put good pics, and a well written post up when the buyers don’t read it

Well, first of all, "ridiculously lowball" is subjective. When someone posts a box and claims retail price is what they paid, I know they're full of it.

When they're asking 85%-90% of that retail, it's even more ridiculous.

My general rule of thumb is that a used box shouldn't be offered for any more than 50% off retail, because I know I can buy the box new off the truck for close to that.

So, as for "low-balling", assuming someone is even close to reasonably priced on their used box (say, 50%) and I offer 50% -60% of what they're asking, we're still talking a couple grand off their asking price, which is almost invariably regarded as low-balling, at least around here.

As far as the seller wasting his/her time with pictures and a well-written description, I believe it's a bigger waste of their time to post, with no pictures, "Snap-on tool box. $9000." as the whole of their advert - and yes, that happens with at least a third of the listings around here.

Ya that’s what I have realized after buying the box. Matco in my area isn’t **** the dealer was around for a while before I decided to make the plunge and it seemed like he only lasted 6mo after buying it. My SO dealer only comes around when you want to buy new tools if you need anything warranty he won’t stop unless you say your buying something. And the Mac dealer at the time said he didn’t want to deal in toolboxes because of the hassle so I felt stuck with Matco and now I’m really stuck with it. I am drawing up plans for my hutch now and we will see how it turns out when I get around to building it

make sure to remove any identifying badges or labels and call it a snap-on box
