Every Day Carry Keychain tools, you heard me right, something that everybody should carry on their keychain for just such an emergency. The trick here is you just need one or two after all you do not want that extra weight in your pants pocket.

Now the trick here is finding just the right EDC Keychain tool that you will use when you are out and about and on the go.

Maybe you want a bottle opener, whistle, wedge tool, screwdriver, can opener, knife blade to cut straps, knife, scissors, file, pliers, wrench, flashlight etc.

I have a bunch, most with a story.

Powerful Pete here was in my grandfathers things when he passed, i was 9 and have had it with me ever since.

My dad bought me a Schrade Oldtimer Goldenbear knife when I earned my Chief Scout Award. It’s about the size of a buck 110 and too big as an edc in an office so I carry this mini version the 10T


Finally the Dookickey. A good friend and I meet for lunch about once a month and can never remember who’s turn it is to pay. Enter the doohickey, whoever has the doohickey gets to pay then pass it to the other guy.

I'm a minimalist when it comes to my pockets. I've been carrying this P38 for 50 years. Actually I did replace one that wore out. This is the original C-ration version. It works as screwdriver, lever, can opener, ripper. I've seen larger versions for sale but the original small one works just fine.

My Leatherman micra. I think it's probably 20+ years-old, I forget when I bought it. After I got it, I bought another, because I found it so-useful. I have it on one of those spring-loaded barrel-shaped keyring detachable 'splitters,' so I can use it by itself if I want, quickly and easily.

Offhand, I cannot recall Macguyver'ing someone out of harm's way with it, but I have used all the accessories at one time or another. The bottle opener has a tiny screwdriver on it that I've found useful for tightening those small eyeglasses screws which hold the lens frame together and the temple pieces on. There is a 'phillips' contour bit, which isn't a true phillips-X, it's just / shaped, but it does fit the slot contour, and I have successfully-used it in a pinch. I've snapped-off the tips on the fingernail grooming tool and on the solitary knifeblade over the years, I for the life of-me, cannot recall how the fingernail grooming tool snapped, my nails aren't that tough. The roughened surface for filing your nails is a good one if you happen to split your nail while working on something. The scissors I use to clip those Harbor Freight coupons, among other things. The tweezers have proven their worth in removing splinters.

I went to Bass Pro Shops and bought a SS split ring to fit onto the tool's carry-fitting eyelet on one end of the tool. It allows the tool to easily attach to the barrel-shaped keyring 'splitter' for ease in conforming to my pocket contour.

When I was on fire-rescue I used to carry a Victorinox tool that I bought in Lucerne Switzerland, it had a corkscrew on it that I always enjoyed whipping-out to use, because it reminded me of when I bought the knife. There was a tiny slot-head bit set-in hard plastic, which screwed into the corkscrew helix, it was the correct size for glasses screws. At various times I used the Victorinox to cut things on EMS calls, but I retired it when I retired. Now it sits in a toolbox, and when I open the toolbox and see it, I'm reminded of its purchase, and its utility to me in the field.

The little leatherman style can posted above is a great option. The Gerber dime is also pretty good. I usually end up using my full size leatherman though. I still like having the small ones. I have given all of my girlfriends something like the leatherman style, at first they say what am I gonna do with this? After a few months they claim it’s one of the best things they ever got lol.

I had a Gerber dime and it broke the first time I used it.
Would cost $35 to ship it back for warranty and that’s less than I paid for it.

I took it back to bass pro where I bought it and asked if they could do anything but they acted like that was the stupidest thing they had ever heard. I went directly to Canadian Tire and bought a Swiss army classic to carry instead.

I’ve got the little carbiner thing that came with one of my Leatherman’s. I use it to hang my keys from my belt loop. I don’t consider it a tool though and have never used it as one. I carry a Leatherman rebar on my belt along with a mini maglight.
