Hello garage floor PHD’s,
After a 10-year wait, I’m finally getting ready for my garage makeover. I’m a weekender that work on cars, motorcycles, engines, yard and house repair stuff. It’s an attached 2-car garage (21’ x 26’ = 550 ft2). The concrete isn’t too bad considering 53 years old in Indiana. There are some small pitting (probably from salt) and few very faint hairline cracks, the slab is solid though.
There’s a small problem area (21” x 5”) that was a ‘courtesy repair’ done by the concrete guy when he did my driveway. Unfortunately, that repair resulted in tons of efflorescence and became worse than the original problem. I want to fix it. I’m pretty good DIY but somehow haven't messed with concrete yet, so I appreciate any guidance. Do I need to break this up all the way through the slab and fill with new concrete? Or break it a bit and cover with some cement repair mix?
What about prep for floor coating? It looks like BallistiX is good option, preferable over something (SPGX Polyurea?) to result in a solid color (light gray). No flakes. It’s a small area (550 ft2), so I don’t mind using the best products available. My previous epoxy floor (UCoatIt) held up great for seven years, but I did baby quite a bit. I’m not dropping hammers on the floor, but I wanted something sturdier. I’m not opposed to renting a floor maintainer or polisher if necessary. What product to use to fill those small cavities?
The hardest part of emptying the garage (wonder if anyone had good luck doing it in halves) and working by myself.
